Isent it stupid how taking a movie and copying it can get you 5 Years in jail and a $250,000 fine, and it's a federal crime.

while Using a machine gun for an offensive or aggressive purpose carries a 5 year prison term maybe more, or a fine of up to $ 1,000. (CT LAW)

and Illegal possession of an assault weapon is a class D felony, with a mandatory minimum one-year prison term and A first-time violation is a class A misdemeanor

    Is this not f'ed up?

Yeah, that law is pretty gay, but it is meant to protect intellectual property.

In my opinion most of the laws need to be redefined. Its like one guy screws up, now we have to punish everybody, loosing our freedom! Which is the total oposite what we want to acheive?

That law is too harsh. There are more serious crimes that carry a lesser penalty.

Of course it's stupid. However, the laws the law. They're just trying to scare you away from doing it. If you're not an idiot though, you won't get caught :p

The law is that way because the lobbyist paid to get that harsh of a law passed. If you look at some of the laws and see how much time people get for serious crimes and others with less serious ones get more it makes no sense

There are a ton of pointless laws, and mixed up laws.

Of course the chance for the outcome of this penalty is very slim...

Sure it makes sense. The big boys who want harsh penalties for copyright infringement have all the cash. The ones getting assaulted by some asshole shooting people don't have the cash. Unfortunately in this day and age, it's all about the money. The more money you have, the more power you have.

Is that law stupid? Well, how stupid are the people that think they can take someones movie and sell it without paying the owner? They are stupid.

There is a reason for that - maybe it easy to restrain someone from carrying their gun and threatening someone than say - someone bought a Movie which cost million to make and sell it without giving royalties to the rightful owner.

no one said anything about selling a movie its just the act of copying it that carries that penalty I'm pretty sure selling it would add penalties.

he is right their does not have to be any selling involved to get those penalties

Does Canada have a tax on cd's, and because of that tax Canadians can download copyrighted material?

So did anyone actually get 5 Years in jail and a $250,000 fine for just copying a movie? Didnt think so. That is the maximum penalty. Only people who sell or share gets maximum penalty so the law is NOT stupid. It is fair.
