I definitely would vouch for xp than the vista which is simply a rubbish. People are now downgrading their systems to xp from vista! A costlier mistake they made in choosing the vista:(

Probably because you also have a high end pc, people with high end pc's or a high amount of ram + 64 bit make it seem like it runs the same, just prettier.

I'm using Vista and I'm not switching back to XP. If I switch os again it will be to Leopard.

I find vista is not to bad now. I turned off the sidebar and switched my antivirus to kaspersky internet security.

I have also noticed my photoshop and dreamweaver are starting up faster on vista.

Please note you should have a good comp for vista. Min specs: dual core chip with 4gb ram.

Start developing some applications for vista and you will find it alot different, during testing i had a hard time while developing plugins.

This is a good thing though, makes it harder to make viruses and hacks.

Vista is cool. The graphics is better than Xp. The switching of windows and the ability to lower the volume of each open program /window is what I like. But need a lot of battery power.

This all depends on your application.

So for example if this is an internet only/email machine? graphic? Gaming?

All these things matter and play in.

Vista uses double the resources and to me this is not a "feature".

I am not against the latest and greatest but the fact is that there is just not enough "new" features in Vista to warrant an upgrade.

Especially since there are "Windows Blinds" programs that can Addon to XP and you an get all the GUI bells and whistles.

Sure the shiny new look is attractive but functionality out weighs the fluff in my opinion.

Simple things like removing the "run" box form the start menu was a complete mistake. Many people such as myslef use that as your shortcut for everything.

Sure you can put it back but the point is wasn't this supposed to be more intuitive???

I agree that as a standalone OS XP has its good/bad

Vista has it's quirks but thats only because it is new and it will work out the kinks.

But as far as "warranted" purchase I just simply cannot be sold at all.

Media Center only on more expensive version.. I mean come on whats that all about?

So whats my conclusion? Well if HP, Dell & gateway still think it is worth it to sell XP and the consumers are demanding it then what does this tell you?

I can buy a machine with double the hardware and be double the Recommended hardware requirements or I can simply "meet" them with Vista.

You do the math here people.

That's actually very incorrect. Vista builds 5000 and higher (with 5112 being Beta 1 and 5048 being first leaked build) were based on Windows 2003 SP1. Granted, 2003 goes back to what you mentioned, but Vista is based directly off of 2003 not 2000.

What many people fail to realize is that the Vista as we know it only began being developed in 2005 and was released in 2006. All development done on Vista (at the time "Longhorn") from 2002 - 2005 was literally trashed. People say that Vista was being developed for 5 years, that'd be incorrect. There were 5 years between XP and Vista, but Vista RTM development only began in 2005.

^^ No that that was really being discussed here, but I still find it kinda relevant.

    Vista > XP.

It takes 1 week of use to realize this.

WOW! they made one hell of an OS in 1 year  Vista may be based on Windows NT but it's got so much new security features that they built in 1 year
