Is it best to set the encoding to Chinese Traditional (Big5) or Chinese Simplified (HZ) or Chinese Simplified (GB 2312) or Chinese Simplified (GB 18030) ? And Japanese Japanese (EUC) or Japanese (Shift-JIS) ? Anyone out there know? any help appreciated. Cheers James
I recommend UTF-8.. UTF-8 is good for multilingual systems and you would have fewer compatibility problems. It can express a wider range of characters than Shift_JIS and EUC-JP. Shift_JIS is a standard code in Japan and also used exclusively for Japanese mobile websites. You are more likely to have garbled characters depending on environment. I prefer Shift_JIS to EUC-JP. Globally, UTF-8 is better for general use. Good luck...
Excellent... Thanks Anna X, I was unsure if UTF-8 was compatible with all Japanese characters.. I did have a sneaky peak at some Japanese websites today and found one using Shift JIS encoding... and then I noticed that I had a visit to my website from what I thought was a proxy.. but turned out to be a English to Japanese translator supplied by Yahoo. http://honyaku.yahoo.co.jp/transtext That site used UTF-8 so I guess.. if its good enough for yahoo, then I suppose I could use it The ironic thing is that I thought I had already translated my pages to Japanese.. I didn't think I done it right Maybe it was a Japanese to Japanese translator Oh well, Live and Learn Cheers James
