Are social bookmarking sites like digg.com profitable? :)

Only giant ones, they make millions, small ones make very little.

not asking whether the members of the site will make money from their joining...but rather whether the owners of the site will make money?

i targeted a digg style niche area and found that i am not that successful. i used pligg script to run my site, and i was forced to shut down because of too much of spam which targeted the script.

    cant say for others :)

You don't think they pay the traffic /hosting/servers with their own money do you? They would be broke in no time considering how many people use that site.

Smaller social bookmarking sites do struggle to make money, but big ones like digg makes money easily.

What those sites actually make and what they are worth are actually two very different things.

Facebook can be worth billions but it spent a long time not making anything.

Some of these big sites monetize their projects indirectly with completely different interests.

100% of the big sites, like fb, twit, etc had/have investors that put millions of dollars to open the project.
