I would say performance. Who wants to pay someone that doesn't do anything?

Yes, they should be compensated in some way :) If it's money, you should pay monthly starting 2 weeks after they begin working.

Normally moderators aren't pay as it is quite a privileged to be chosen to be a mod especially for a big forum. Some administrators are paid because they do extra coordination work.

If the forum is making the owner a lot of money and the mods are really helping out, then why not! :)

I don't pay my mods but I have offered to buy link packages for them :)
None have taken me up on it, but I tried...lol
I use to run a forum that had the points system in place and I would send the mods an occasional point bonus.

yes. i am being paid monthly to be a mod for another forum. violations are not that often, but sometimes i do have to yell, "you will respect my authori-tie!"... as cartman would say. :p

My own forum is not so big so I don't pay them right now. But yes I am a mod on other forum and officially I am not a paid mod but still I get gifts :D

It is not that my morale would go down if I am not paid but it keeps a person happy even if it is a gift of $1 or $10.

Yes I would pay depending on what type of forum it was and how much maintenance it really needed and how many mods I have.

I would pay monthly and by their performance. Some just slack off to slack off. Some take on the job cause they were great at one point, than power took over, than comes the great boot. Some remain loyal, true and honest. Some have to move on due to personal situations and have to find a new mod. So yes pay monthly and by performance.

I pay the Mods with points... and the points in turn can be spent on real items in our "store." The store is an advertising vehicle for a psonsor, who basically shares the cost of the points.

I pay other emembers in a similar way. using the Vbux "paycheck," various group members get various number of points per month. Review drafters, article writers, mods, etc... all get something.

Then, I use points even further by offering large bonuses for site-specific work, like a major graphics overhaul, or for a vbulleting upgrade. We even use them for advertising promotions of seasonal, quarterly, or annual contests. People love the points... it's either s status symbol like Rep is, or they spend it on the geasr that they really care about (because it's a niche site with the same niche gear in the store).
