I have been hunting around and still haven't found a good script that is free and able to be customized... What shopping cart system do you use and do you like it?

I don't need a store. I have my own stuff available right from the manufacturers.
I tried oscommerce, and it is a horrible script. It resets itself without any notice, and it is complicated to understand and customize. Half of the time it doesn't load right.

Shopping carts can be installed from the Fantastico section of your control panel (cPanel). The following are shopping cart packages which are available for free with Fantastico: E-Commerce, CubeCart, OSCommerce and Zen Cart.

I know that. I've installed each and every one of them. I don't like how ZenCart functions. CubeCart can't change the announcement on main page, and OSCommerce as mentioned before would reset itself ocassionally.

Has anyone ever heard of PHPShop?

    PHPAudit, Zen Cart and osCommerce.

I've used them and I'll say PHP Audit for shopping cart. Very stable script.

I need to create an estore for a person that's new to online selling and anything that has to do with computers.
I've been looking at Zen Cart and OSCommerce and they seem far too complicated...

If you don't like osCommerce, ZenCart etc. try Avactis Shopping Cart. May be you like it. We also used osCommerce earlier and didn't like it because our customers couldn't use it. Avactis cart is much easier from storefront management and customization point of view. And if you are web developer you can get one copy for FREE here

There is a new open-source shopping cart like Zen Cart and OS Commerce that has piqued a lot of interest from the web community, including my interest. It's called Magento, and you can see videos of some of its cool features by going to the Magento screencasts. Magento is due to be released in Q1 2008. Some are calling it the ZenCart killer. Magento's features look awesome, but whether the product actually delivers remains to be seen.

OS Commerce version 3 also might be cool, but we could be waiting a while for that.

I've been using OSCommerce for a long time. Recently I tried Magento, but although it looks sleek, I find the development to be horrible, possibly worse than OSCommerce, and that's saying a lot. What I specifically dislike about Magento is the directory structure. It's ridiculous, and makes finding anything extremely hard. Why they couldn't have settled on a more simple directory structure is beyond me, but hey, I guess editing your theme at this directory:

    app/design/frontend/default/default/

and then editing your CSS and images in this directory:

    skin/frontend/default/default/

is a lot better than having a system such as:
    /themes/yourtheme/

Right? Ha ha. Yeah, their directory structure blows. The first two are the actual theme directories in Magento. The entire script has horrible directory structures such as this. The directories go very deep. So deep that it took me over an hour to delete a Magento installation via FTP, when it took only 3 minutes to upload it.

So in the end, I've decided to drop OSCommerce and Magento, and I've simply custom coded my own ecommerce system. I'll probably make it a commercial app sometime in the next year or two.

jquindlen, thanks for your thoughts. I'm not sure directory structure is that big of deal to me, but I'm not a programmer like you.

Do you have any thoughts on the Zen Cart vs. OS Commerce debate? Also, are there any licensed carts you like?
