You can have 3 ad units 1 link unit. Search box and refferals not sure never looked at how many for refferals.

how many ads you put in a single page is important but be wise to place it in the right and good position with color combination to get high CTR
Sometimes just one advert performes better then two or three. the only way you can find out is to test...test...test!
