Do you think Microsoft will die in a few years?

There are many companies that are doing better than them. Do you think it will die off?

    Don't think so,
Few companies are just doing better than Microsoft, but Microsoft is a multiple product manufacturing company and they own lots of products, so i guess the way Microsoft is doing right now is really good, they just want to be on top in each and every niche.

It has a current market capitalization of $382.89B. In general not possible for such a company as profitable as Microsoft to die in the next few years or for many years to come.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/q/sec?s=MSFT

Will be a good source to get more information of companies and how they had performed.

I don't think Microsoft brand is not as good as before, frankly speaking few brands have the recognition Microsoft have. The good will attribute to their brands can easily be hundreds of millions.

Few if any inside the computer industry won't know of Microsoft and most desktop users are using Microsoft.

Server OS wise, Microsoft IIS 6 is catching up strongly on Apache. Their search engine may not be as good as Google, but still it is in the Top 3.

Just to clarify something on this point, IIS 7 (full release) is almost out now. An interesting snippet of information I came across was that Zend have been working with Microsoft for PHP (yes, IIS 7 will run PHP!) and preliminary benchmarks are putting the PHP performance at/better than current linux/apache based PHP performance. It will be interesting to see how the eventual product performs when it is released as the security is quite beefed up as well.

In regards to the OP, your question has no merit and as such is fundamentaly flawed. A straight answer would be no.

Their technologies being used by developers & programmers - Check
Technologies used by admins - Check
Somewhat Successful In Video Gaming - Eh, up there with PS3 and Wii... check I guess
Successful contender with iPods - eh.. still getting outsold by iPods... but respectable marketshare... Check

Of course there's several other ventures some iffy and some successful for the most part, but in short no they won't be going down anytime soon off of those 4 things alone.

well i think they are going to loos the computer software part but not the Games because of the xbox360. also not all the software we use now is made by them which is a very good thing as there prize tags on most of them are two high and there is some much better software out there for less and runs better on there very on OS.

and some people are not even using there OS anymore and after what some people have been thinking about vista that was not a good turn for them to make.

so i think some company will one day take over M$ yes.

MAC is growing more every day now

I don't think so, they are far too entrenched, Mac has tried never manage to capture much market share, it is more of a niche for graphic designers.

I remember Microsoft even need to help Mac out for it to survived to ensure some competition so as not to be penalized for a monopoly.

Microsoft will remain in top position for software developers for many many years from now on BUT i don't think Bill Gates will remain the richest man in the world in the next 10 years.

Larry Page & Serghei Brin from Google will have the biggest fortune ;)

Personally, I think Microsoft is just getting started. They have some really smart ideas coming down the pipe that could blow things like the iPod out of the water. I love Microsoft, always have been a Windows girl and probably always will be. Love my Zune and my Xbox 360, and I'm loving the fact that Microsoft keeps improving their tools so all their products can interact with each other, smart move. I can use Messenger on my 360, my Zune on my 360, the list goes on. They won't be dying off anytime soon, I think they are trying to make strategic moves to kill their competition.....

Microsoft isn't going anywhere. They spend $7 BILLION on research annually, and that increases every year. They have $36 billion in cash, short term investments, and receivables. Google by comparison spend $1.2 billion on R&D. Google also has roughly $12 billion in cash, short term investments, and receivables. Google gets all the hype, but they are still only a fraction of what Microsoft is.

They are not going anywhere even for decades. The have a long term strategy plan and I think they will be around for a long long time.

It would take a great great disaster to make a company like Micro$oft on their knees. As long as MS windows remain the most popular OS and MS Office most popular document package, there is no 'fear' of collapsing ;)

as we all know M$ is not as good quality wise as other top competitors.. but their deep pockets let them keep on competing and if any real threat shows up they eventually end up buying them out.

so i really think M$ has many many years left

Microsoft will stay for many years for sure. Why? Because there is no competition. There are many linux-people that are screaming all the time that linux is the best, but to be honest, it's good for servers or routers but no for desktop!
It's completely not user friendly and it's stability is rather a myth (maybe on servers, but not on desktops), on my PC (P4 2.4 Ghz + 1GB ram), it was hanging up all the time.

I am sure that Microsoft will stay, because I even don't see anyone who tries to create something better then Windows (I am thinking about XP, in my opinion Vista is aero-glassy-shit).
All in all, Windows XP is very good and stable system, Microsoft has made wrong decision ending support for this OS in nearest years, but I don't think that this will harm them too much :)
