I have to say that there seems to be a lot of hate going around. Perhaps we can look at this objectively? XP still does everything that most people want it for, so there's really no reason to upgrade. There's no deep and abiding reason for the upgrade. As I understand it, there were 3 'pillars' for longhorn, and none of the 3 were implemented (or maybe just the one that turned into Aero). As for support, who cares? You have to screen your automatic updates anyway so that you can avoid installing the WGA spyware. At least when M$ stops "supporting" it, you won't have to deal with that. Perhaps I don't entirely understand what the discontinuation is supposed to entail. Vista sure looks pretty. But as far as I can tell, from the reports of people who've tried to use it, that's the only difference. And that difference isn't worth $300. Or even $150. Why would I spend that much money when I can get an operating system that will do everything that I need for free? Sure, I'm a linux guy. But I still run windows, and I actually like to play games still. But I don't ever intend to shell out money on a useless operating system again. It's just not worth it. If M$ wants my money, they'll have to come up with a better reason for me to give it to them.
Blah! it's a computer world conspiracy! Do you guys remember the stories about Microsoft having some kind of partnership with Intel. Every time MS would create an OS that used more resources, then Intel would create a bigger processor...and they could make money off each other that way. Like, it seems logical. Unless you are running a dual core and 1GB RAM minimum, you might as well not bother with Vista. This stuff about Vienna coming out in 09 is crazy if it's true. I love computers, but I am sick of the powers that be in the computer worlds. It's ridiculous. I might have to break down and get a MAC or learn some Linux stuff...sheesh. Both of which I am hell bent against.
Ugh! Vista is terrible, yet I'm stuck with it. My laptop's more efficient only when in Vista because some drivers are not available for XP. Yeah, to those who mentioned conspiracy, I guess there really is a conspiracy going on here...
Strange that they would drop XP before releasing the next version. Years ago I use to work for Microsoft and the policy then was they support the current operating system plus the previous version and that was it. So if they released the next OS in 2009 that would be when they would drop XP. But who knows. I currently use XP and took me a while to actually get round to upgrading from windows 95 (I was also running Windows NT on another machine).
I am a music producer/audio engineer/movie editor what should I run if these are the same? I used windows way longer then mac's so should I just start using windows again since its going to be the same thing?
MS might delay and will delay the retire of XP and has to cox XP rox ma sox and vista sux ma sox n so on lolz bad move Billy if u retire xp
@techpr: Ubuntu is great, but average Joe has a hard time getting around in XP/Vista, not to mention Linux. On topic, XP has been on market since 2001. Don't you think it has surpassed it's purpose (once Vista hit the shelves)?
As long as they still release those /crappy/ updates for XP.... im fine... I also have a bunch of files scattered throughout 400 GB of hard drive soo I can't live without them.
I can not use vista as it doesn't Network (work). I'm an H.P. fan but ordered two dells (desktop's)because I could get XP, Bought daughter Mac notebook Pro....That is it!!!!! when I can use it for work(windows server network) add-on app, I will go mac.
