I've only submitted my sites to google as far as search engines go- as the other engines will crawl over what google has after a few weeks ot make sure they're not missing out on anything.

I do my directoy submissions manually- that was I can alter each entry a little each time so they're not exact duplicates. Very useful in getting established.

I really don't think search engine submission will do much for you anymore except doing sitemap submissions to Google and Yahoo. Supposedly MSN too, but the last time I tried the MSN submission form was broken.

Submitting real directories such as DMOZ and smaller credible ones is good. Submitting your RSS feed is also a good idea. I have links to 30 RSS submission pages that don't require registration approval or reciprocal links at traffic-searcher.com.

I don't think submitting to FFA sites will do anything but get you spam. If you do it never use your regular email address.

Yahoo and MSN optimization will work if you submit your site to a 100 well indexed directories, the reaction of Google is interesting: I got top 10 for my keywords with Google after a 100 dir listings popped up (jumped from the 3rd page) for 2 days and then was safely back to the 3rd page :)

Search engines like Google ignore the links from FFA sites. They really are not worth the numerous spam email you received as a result.

    You may read about this
"FFA Links (which stands for Free For All links) are NOT search engines. What you may have learned by now is that FFA sites are often times nothing more than e-mail collection sites hoping to spam your e-mail address after submission. There is no benefit in FFA links."

Oh hell no. Of course not.

I read an article that indicated submitting your site to the search engines can actually slow its growth in the serps and getting indexed??? They were saying it is better to just get some good PR links and the indexing will take care of itself.

ahhhh the beauty of marketing... While a bit bold (no pun), it's just more of the same - this board is filled with skilled marketers, and we all participate for the sake of 'marketing' no matter how non-intrusive we try to be.

To stay on topic, submitting to as many sites as possible is good, ffa is unfortunately crap but if it's free=more backlinks, some have some PR etc... Get yourself a copy of IBP, best move you'll make to generate competition eliminating SEO and auto submitting to the most relevant/important directories and se's.

For those that have little to no success of or knowledge base but can at least copy/paste some code, you can also try http://www.addme.com to get yourself listed on many important ones free for displaying their graphic for a while...

    Cheers, to marketing.

Get your visitors to do it. Like what was and still is done with CraigsList.org.

Talk about a fucking success story when it comes to word of mouth. He wrote the book.
