Hi, thanks for the help. I have a few websites that just recently have been fluctuating between being on page one of search results for a particular keyword, and not appearing at all, on a daily basis. Yesterday I was number six, not there at all today. Yet I'm still number one for another keyword. Has been happing for a couple of weeks. Number four, number nothing, number eight, number nothing. Quite the wild ride. Any ideas why? Thanks very much. MJ
Thanks. One of the sites has been up and high in the rankings for years. Is there some reason it's fluxing so drastically day to day that you know of?
But the worst one is an older site, at least a few years old. Is that normal? Can you please tell me what it is my webhost could do that makes my daily google rankings flucuate so wildly? I don't know what to check with them for, thank you. MJ
Ya,its so common for a new site the ranking fluctuating. Just get more links and publish good content..
First it is important to understand that when you search Google, your search request is sent to a particular data center for handling. G has at least 50 data centers and perhaps hundreds. The data can vary quite a bit from DC to DC. Generally, it seems to me that there are 2 or 3 different sets of results across DCs at any given time. So apparently, there is at least one set of SERPs in which your sites don't appear. Sometimes you hit that set when searching. Sometimes you hit the set in which they do appear. As for reasons why your sites may not appear, no one knows for sure. But as other posts indicate, it is fairly common for this to happen for a while. I believe that it is a result of G doing a completely new analysis and scoring of your sites. I think G sets all factors to zero first, then recalculates from there. But, I think these calculations can take a while because they are done by multiple sub-routines that need to be scheduled. During this period, the site in question can disappear because all mathematical factors are set to zero or because they are only partially calculated. I can't prove that, but my programming experience tells me that is most likely what is happening. Once things settle down, more often than not you wind up in a better position than you were before. That is not always true, but if you have been doing quality improvements, it is most likely true. /*tom*/
As a matter of a fact, its good sometimes to drop ones positions, you start fixing all the mistakes, update your content and make your site more for the visitor and it becomes even better
thanks, all. I think that longcall911 must have the right idea. Today I'm back on page one, yesterday we weren't there at all, day before page one. That could explain a geographic sales trend I've seen, also. Thanks for the help, it's been freaking me out. Sites are good on content, no tricky biz, etc.
