Does anyone have any updates about Bodog's legal troubles? I know this situation is probably a nightmare for them and has seriously devalued their company. I recall reading an article in Entrepreneur magazine (I think) that said their company was worth about $1 billion. After loosing their main domain name I'm sure the estimate now would be a lot lower. You also have to factor in the customers and sales they've lost.
They've lost very little, they just set up their new domains and e-mailed all their customers the next day. Someone had a big post about this a few months ago on their blog. If you're curious just look at the alexa stats for their old site and compare it to their new site.
They still probably lost quite a number of potential customers, after spending all that time developing and marketing the bodog.com domain, only to be forced to change it to a longer, less memorable domain.
I think that Calvin Ayre is still trying to get them back. I think that Calvin should just rebrand Bodog into something else, another name.
You're saying that they've lost very little after their website went from being called Bodog.com to BodogLife.com? Simply the change in domain name probably cut the value of their business in half. Do you think the value of Ebay.com would go down if they changed their name to EbayLife.com? I think it would!
1) Ebay does a ton of advertising, Bodog is nowhere near the household name that ebay is nor did they spend anywhere near as much on branding. 2) Bodog had a list of all their customers, past and present and simply e-mailed them to let them know of the domain name change. The amount of traffic hasn't dropped significantly since the domain name change, they are still bringing in the revenue, that is what matters. Now if they didn't have a mailing list then it would be a different story. Now as to when will they get the domain back, the question is are they even trying to? The whole reason they lost the domain is because they didn't show up to court because they didn't recognize the court's jurisdiction to oversee the case. To appeal the ruling would be to say, to a certain degree, that they now recognize the court's jurisdiction which they refused to do in the first place.
I am not experienced in this legal stuff, but hopefully they should get their domain back as it rightfully belongs to them as soon as they recognize the court's jurisdiction.
Bodog actually does a lot of advertising and is one of the top online gambling websites on the internet. My family owns a condo in Costa Rica so maybe I should move there and start my own gambling site.
think the whole episode kinda gave bodog and calvin a huge amount of press coverage. Calvin is a smart PR genius. On the name change its not really affected their business since all the redirects where changed in the search engines and with affiliates etc so people kinda new were to go . Dont think they will get the name back thus.
