    Thats a good point snowbird,
From searches I have done on the domain tells me that the art organization may be having trouble with, or trouble contacting there web designer, (who owns there domains)
The domain does not get much traffic, but ranks #1 when searching for this art group (in full name or abbreviated). they have started another website (without the web designer) which yesterday came #2 on the search.. today it is not on the first two pages. (maybe they have been buying links ;))
I may contact the art group and see if they want it back...

    Cheers
    James

If Google started doing that then their algorithm would simply become useless. Why would Google shoot themselves in the foot?

Very sad day for webmasters. Now it has become difficult to sleep - with a constant fear of being a victim of sabotage by over-jealous competitors.

Google got its algo all together wrong.

I don't think we have to worry about that really, and I think it is all for the best.
This is what will happen as a guess.
Price of paid links will fall.
Not may would go to the trouble or cost to add paid links to cometitors as lests face it there are so many, and all you would have to do is reposrt this to G anyway as they are reasonable.

many ways to do it for free and without too much trouble

google is foolish if they think that this won't be done

saying "not many would...." is being really naive

I bet it would be possible to even automate the process, sort of like the splog 'business'... automate schemes to make link farms that appear to be selling or buying links and mix in some sites you want to sabotage... maybe even offer the service for a small fee by paypal

Thanks Charlee22 for finding the thread. I will take it from that link that JohnMu is a Google employee. Even if he is, from the thread, I took away that he was saying some links might be discounted as they were discovered to be of the paid variety. JohnMu does not however say anything about this being the cause of the -50 penalty. If I missed that part, please point me to it.

    No problem "arbitrary".....

here is page that says that, posts with a G logo next to them are offical posts by google emloyees and is official information: http://groups.google.com/group/Goog...p-charter-and-tips-please-read-before-posting

and no JohnMu doesn't specifically say anything is the cause of the -50 penalty. Its just that the question that was asked was, why did the site get de-indexed..being high quality and very professional with no black hat on page? ... I am just assuming that JohnMu looked at the sites status before just replying in the post.

The site came back into the index later in the thread with a -50 penalty......I am assuming a Google employee would check to see whats going on with the site before giving the reasons for its status. All JohnMu said was that the site is of high quality....and then only refered to the links it had...and only gave that as the reason for the problem. which I think was the site getting de-indexed and then re-indexed with a -50 penalty.

IMO, I think Google is trying really hard not to answer the question...they dont have an answer and the answer might ruin them

Google simply says don't buy links, so when your buying your taking that chance especially if you don't have a great overall link profile...If most of your links look artificial then their you go...sooner or later you'll be dropped...Now if overall most of your links are natural compared to purchased you should be fine....But don't have 80% purchased and 20% natural links....thats a horrible link profile and its asking for trouble...

You mention 80% bad links...... so a strategy to black hat your competitor's site would be to use a spam strategy to drop a bunch of bad links to his site every day, very quickly you would overrun the natural links and then that should do it to get his site knocked down.

If you are correct, this is a big flaw in the google algorithm and a major tool that the black hats can use.

I would expect that there are many already trying this experiment on a bunch of competitor's sites.

So, it is time for some of the Black Hat experts to offer tools and services to "get your competitiors down".

Create thousands of splogs and spam sites using scripts. Put site wide links to competitor in side bar under the heading "Text Link Ads". :D

This has been happening for more than 1 year now, your competitor can easily get your site removed even if it is clean. So keep your sites a secret.

    From Google Webmaster Guidelines:

"Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites."

Well, Yahoo! and many other "relevant directories" offer paid links!
    Doesn't this sound like self-contradiction?
