2,000,000€ to market your website? What would you invest that in?

I just read an article about a new site launched here in Spain recently www.salir.com. These guys actually got 2 million euros of venture capital funding to launch their site... The site is something equivalent to Yelp.com I guess all about rating establishments and basically a social networking site with a special focus on places (to eat, shop, party...).

    I really cant understand it...

They launched 3 months ago, have only 4 cities in Spain and content whise its absolutely lame. My local business directory has more entries than that :p But now seriously I haven't even heard about that site until today when I read it in a business magazine (and I'm surfing 24/7)...

So fellow DPers, what would you do with 2,000,000 euros (thats 2,879,106.33 USD) to promote your site?

I'd pay myself 1.995mil EUR and spend 5000 EUR on advertising like these guys are doing.

I would run away with the money, and laugh at those venture capitalists for their idiocy. :)

you cannot buy skills/brain with money .. they got money but no brain, you got brain but no money.. and if someone gets both, he is the potential for a billionaire.

Thats what I believe, since I have seen many such high budget ventures come and go.

I shouldn't be so negative you never know they may go far. I bet if someone pitched the idea of My Space 5 years ago I might have laughed.

Its incredible right?! Thank God, its not just me... I was incredulous. Oh and by the way they are looking "to become profitable in 2 years, i.e. that 2,000,000€!! And their main source of income is envisioned to come 50% from advertising and 50% from bars, restaurants, etc. to promote themselves online!

with 2 million euros, i'd just spend a tiny fraction of it.... the rest i'll get my self a new house and a lamborghini.. im sure you don't need that much money to spend it on your website.. i'd just spend a maximum of 50000 euros to promote (and get 40 times of it over time)

Obviously the 2million pounds is a marketing technique for getting exposure and link baiting and whatever, I don't really think so.. doesn't look anything that bright yet..

I'm glad to read I'm not alone in thinking that those 2,000,000 euros are way out of proportion especially to the project they launched! Plus they have only 1,000,000 pageviews in three months! I have more pageviews on some websites that run on no budgets!! Crazy...

I don't see why people are slagging off the product, there is nothing too wrong with it. It does what it's supposed to do, doesn't it? As for 2million. Well, whatever. But if true, full page adverts in magazines / newspapers and tv/cinema advertising could easily swallow that up with an aggressive promotion period.

You could buy a lot of offline advertising (TV, newspaper ads + outdoor ads). This way in a short period of time everybody will know your website.

Ya, I guess I would buy some television advertising?

Or high visibility ads on some MAJOR websites.
