Should I also buy the .net and .org names?

Hi, I am planning to buy like 10 domain names and was considering buying the .net and .org names but it adds a lot to the price. Could I get some feedback on why I should or shouldn't? I thought most people type in the website w/ out the extension or almost everyone types in .com.

I plan to run these sites for long term and was wondering what are the ramifications if I don't register them.

Also, does 1&1 really have free anonymous domain name registration? I saw on their site that domain registration is 6.99. Do yall think 1&1 is a good/reliable registrar?

no...it can just make a competitor start up a site with a .org instead of .com, similar to your site. so yes it is beneficial to buy the other extensions

As for 1&1 being a good registrar I will say that they are all pretty much the same BUT 1&1 SEEMS ( I have no proof) to take longer than godaddy to propagate on DNS.

If you can get the .com, you shouldn't have to get the other tlds in my opinion.

I see no need for buying extra extension at least if you don't plan to brand your url : exemple as google

Even if google didn't buy out all their extensions i think they would have enough cash to offer to the owners nowadays.

I think it is useless unless you plan on your site being the next best greatest thing. It adds way to much to the cost. I did it twice and I said i would never do it again.

It depends on what the domain is. If the domain is a simple keyword that you'll be using for parking, i.e. televisions.com, chances are you wouldn't need the .net and .org because you aren't branding, you're simply trying to get the traffic and as mentioned, the .com will be the majority of it. However if you are registering the domain as a company name, brand name, etc, such as google.com, you'd probably want to grab the .net and .org... imagine if NBC owned FOX.net and FOX.org.

Google doesn't offer to buy them, they file trademark infringements against them and get the domains for free after a costly legal battle.

Well there you go, another reason not to buy out all the extensions, ignoring the legal expenses.

What's easier... the $20 a year for the .net and .org to protect your brand and avoid all the legal issues and hassle, or spending thousands of dollars on lawyers and even more worth of your time in UDRP hell? Again this is under the assumption the domain is for his company/brand and not just a keyword.

+1 it's always better it you have all the names that you need, but it shouldnt be that be a deal if ur just starting a site. maybe pick them up in the future if u feel its necessary
