I've found submitting useful comments is a handy way to get traffic in some areas. I don't do this myself, I outsource it, but it might be worth a look.

Well, I'm glad you think I don't know what I'm talking about because if it was presented as a fact I'd have to take offense. Look, I'm not against posting comments on blogs. I do it all the time. But I don't post for the link back, nor do I need to. I post on blogs for the same reason that I post on forums - to contribute something useful and relevant to the discussion at hand. THAT is what gets me the traffic, not the backlinks.

As the old saying goes, say something useful and people will listen to you. Speak to a wall and people will ignore you. It's obvious what I do.

Ah, yes. The same magic bullet that will also cure cancer, lose weight (for the record, I am overweight myself - and need to do something about it SOON), improve their - ok, I won't go there ;) ... Whatever happened to an honest day's work for an honest day's pay? :(

Exactly. Posting quality, relevant and useful comments will get you more traffic than just posting for the backlink. Afterall the one thing bloggers care more about than anything else (ok, other than money) is what a person has to say. :)

It's all about creating quality content. Wherever you find a space to do so, and give yourself credit for it in some way or another, that's where there's seo to be done.

As for govs and edu's, don't pin all your hopes on them. It's true they're treated just like any other tld. BUT, I think most of us would rather have a random .edu backlink as opposed to a random .com backlink. Because edu and gov sites are typically established, quality sites that have great content that people link to (there's that c-word again)

I only agree to part of it. In fact I think why people think .edu and .gov is better because they usually have higher PR and as a result SEs trust them more.

One simple scenario is that you can expect the website of a College can get backlinks a lot easier than our websites, even if they do not do link building. The notion of College can itself attract links and it is just like a link baiting. And most Colleges bear TLDs .edu.

So I don't think it is about how SEs treat TLDs but it is about how people treat the websites bearing the TLDs.

Most colleges bear the .edu TLD because that's what they are - educational instiutions. The fact that they have lots of incoming links (and thus higher PageRank values) is because most of the content the colleges and universities (bear in mind I'm not talking about student generated pages, but the main content - the real meat and potatoes of the site) contains lots of valuable information that other sites link to when citing their sources. The same can easily be done with a .com .net .org .MyDogLarry (ok, that last one was a joke) TLD if one puts the same amount of effort into it. :)
