A directory in it's raw sense is inert, it can not think, act and nor with that make money.

A learnerd business person ( directory master ) can take that inert directory and yes with their skills across a broad range of topics related to running and managing a web directory may in turn produce a profit in relation to his / her experience and this can be magnified by effort / careful decision making.

There is to magic yellow brick road to riches in the directory business as with any other business, and often the skills required to succeed are the same regardless of business type.

A directory has potential to make money, any business can make a lot of money, it depends how you approach it.

Virtually every business will tell others that a type of business is saturated, but that doesn't mean that you cant make shed loads in it.

I read this all the time:

In directory world - Too many of them
Domaining - its too late, all the good names are gone, lol
    Adult industry, its saturated, lol

While some common sense in the statements, they are still kinda hollow remarks and you can indeed get rich in any or others.

I think that the gestation period is very long for a directory to start making money. And that too after a lot of work. I guess it needs at least 6 months before it can start giving you some good money.

A good directory does not expect money after it starts (not for a while unless...) and there's only a menstruation period since cash bleeds from promoting your site if your serious. But hey you can buy links from legit owners here and they are really good sites. We know each other. :)
Lots and lots of hard work and bleeding is involve. :D
I guess your a troll and your foresight of the term promotion is limited to 6 months. There are directory owners who have been promoting for 15 years and they don't stop. ;)

I disagree, i wouldn't call any directory that expects money from the start not good, if you dont expect money after the start, as a good directory owner, then remove all the various listing charges and offer them all for free.

Using cash for promotion does not make you serious, if you dont know where your heading then it can make you a huge fool.

This is complete nonsense how many people repeat this that your only serious and your directory can only be good if you threw a few grand at the thing from day one.

Naturally as a directory owner, someone is going to promote that myth, because you need to convince the other guys to spend, and where better to spend, well on your directory of course.

Also bad advice as a paid directory owner to tell anyone that free directories are a waste of time and that your biased view of the most important are where its at.

Unique templates meaning your more serious is utter nonsense too, just means you gave some work to your friend and in return he/she will mention your directory wherever they go.

Some of the poorest looking websites are 100 times more successful than any of us.

A million people can see through the statements, i would rather promote mine as is, until their something more, then il be able to justify it being more than before.

I would not buy a link ;) but yeah id pay with submission to any domain extension, while i understand that .info are often associated with spam/cheap/here today gone tomorrow type of sites, not all are that way inclined.

The same could happen to a .com and purchasing a domain for 5 years means no more commitment either.

The extension is more important to domainers i feel.

you learn quick young jedi .. :D

I have seen alot off these popping up lately and why i asked :)

I actually think that Go-Daddy devalued the .info ext with that $1.99 domain special
crap as every 3rd worlder luvs them to death

With the way google is acting lately i guess maybe its just not smart to purchase a domain for longer then
1 year i suppose for fear that it could get blasted...

    thx

It is all about age. Make sure you can maintain the directory for couple year, you will make money by then. But before that I believe you can cover the cost from the listings since the hosting is so cheap now.

But don't expect to make quick easy money from it. or any internet website :)

    :)

I agree, godaddy gave .info that disposable feel, i couldn't blame anyone either for not wanting to think further ahead than 12 months, as you say Malcolm, you never quite know how the search engines will go.

cheap hosting is very far from the truth :(

Could be driving a brand new Cadillac Escalade with the monthly hosting bill
thats payed  But then again their isnt many hosts that offer different C classes
    for all our directories...

    thx
