I thought their aim is "Do No Evil" ? Lets hope they stick to that. Or maybe they want to replace Microsoft?
"I see it already happening with things such as smartpricing and the recent text link selling penalty. Google is only out for Google these Days. You dont hear too much about Google doing more to help the individual webmaster earn more money, only about things Google does to enhance it’s own revenue." SmartPricing doesn't make Google more revenue. This is specifically stated in the official Adsense blog.
This happens a lot with companies. It's not really the fault of the founders usually. They hire new people who want to show "progress" and growth etc and to do so they implement stupid things that are either against the spirit of the company, or just plain illogical. Anybody who has been in a company when they had a change in management probably knows what I'm talking about. It's almost inevitable that it would happen to Google too.
So you do believe everything a for-profit corporation tells you? Google can easily smartprice a publisher, pay him less for clicks, and just keep the extra change. They don't tell you when you're smartpriced(or if you are), how much of percentage of a click you recieve, and everything about what income you generate is secret except what they decide to give you.
Lets face it - any time a large corporation has that much power we should always be concerned. This is not just a Google related issue, but a "BIG corporation" related issue in general. It is scary when an entity can control this much of someones success even if you are working within their "so-called" guidelines.
Google said they don't profit from smartpricing. http://adsense.blogspot.com/2005/10/facts-about-smart-pricing.html
Yahoo doesn't have the power to beat Google. They tried with YPN and they ended up banning so many high profile publishers.
Nice post. Actually Yahoo is very powerful. Take a look at this. Granted, YPN doesn't compare...Yahoo is a people community. It seems to me having people attracted to your site is more important than having searchers use your engine. Google may seem evil to many webmasters, but what r u gonna do when you are being gamed by everybody and their uncle . I agree with raising the bar, also agree with protecting your own business model. In Google SERPS the cream rises, while Yahoo SERPS are pretty good but not as refined. MSN is also easy to rank compared to Google. Are they evil? No more than any other fortune 500 corporation ! H
I don't understand this - do you think google are scum and boycott them - or are waiting to get paid by them - after Christmas? How many of the people in this thread berating google for putting the profit motive first, try to use google to make money?
Well, ya. You gotta remember Yahoo! is a portal, google isn't. Yahoo is a news provider, email provider, free site provider, and loads more that Google doesn't have yet. Yahoo! is also older than google - and google is mainly powered by its search engine. Yahoo has a lot more content than google itself has and that's a fact.
Google might have said they would do no evil - and I don't think they have. Looking out for #1 isn't necessarily evil - and they never promised they wouldn't. Ok, I'm ready for the flames.
I suppose that's left to interpretation of content? Google has the largest index but it's not their content. In that sense Google is evil. They are where they are from scrapping other sites for their serps. Did we give them permission ? Yahoo for sure has the most unique content and is a community, as you said. If you look at Yahoo answers it's quite awesome. I have posted questions and answers there and within minutes they are in Google's result pages. H
Well i m with you High time we started something like that Let me tell you if we can enrol something like 1 million + webmasters then we have the ability to compete with google Just all the webmasters remove the ads for a day and then again put it back next day, you can imagine the hole in google's wallet It may look like a dream but possible Google policy of "Do No Evil" is for the publishers and not followed by them The moment you start generating decent income from adsense then you have the smart pricing kicking in-why-why cant they just pay what we are earning I am in - International Alliance of Web Publishers! (IAWP)
Isn't smartpricing great for advertisers? Wouldn't that fall along the lines of do no evil. Also "Do no Evil" doesn't mean enrich webmasters at the expense of advertiser. No one is going to be happy with everything google does.
