Use XP, no problems at all. Vista is hated by a lot of people, at least you know XP is in full working order. Vista is a waste of money at the moment. ;)

At the risk of sounding redundant.. and RIGHT..

Get a Mac. Even if you don't want the far superior operating system (OS X Leopard), Macs can run Windows Vista faster than PCs can, in addition to dual-/tri-/#-booting any OSes you have.

have you tried installing the release candidate of SP1 for vista?

A few people I know have had some of their vista problems remedied.

I'll second Ubuntu :) (just installed it on a laptop). But to your issue probably the best thing to do is to add some more ram. I believe that 1 gig is needed to keep it limping along.

Have you taken a look under "control panel" - "System" and looked at your rating? I know it's too late, but that is a decent indicator of how the system is going to perform. I am not totally sure of what is a good rating but mine is a 4.3 (64 bit OS with 2gig ram) and I am happy with the performance.

Everybody say to me that the Vista is very slow. I bought new computers for my office with Vista, but I haven't any problem with this. I had only problem with the native browser of Vista (IE 7.0). I think it's a terrible browser.
Since I use the Firefox, I haven't any problem.
