Hello, I was wondering what your suggestions were for software that allows to operate a PC from remote, as in the typical case in which someone wants to access to files on the office computer from home. I guess something like go to my pc, but it's too expensive to use.
I always use logmein (the free version) to help my sisters abroad whenever they're having trouble with their pc. It works perfectly and it's FREE!
The last time I needed remote access (last year) I used UltraVNC over a Hamachi connection (before LogMeIn bought them) - and it was great. I still use UltraVNC for my home to home connections, but I'm about to reinstall Windows on my laptops (which I use 'on the road') ... are there any bad things about the free version of LogMeIn that I should know about before I give it a try?
If you need the basic remote access then logmein free works great! If you have a hi-speed internet then you won't experience any lag. You can't drag and drop files from your pc to the remote pc though. What I do is, I have my YM online and transfer files via YM And if I need to listen through the remote speaker, I make a voice call via YM and put my mic on mute.
As long as I have remote desktop access, and file transfers, I'm happy. I've just checked their site: Does this 'premium' service get in the way at all? Or do you just click 'no thanks' and get to use the free version without annoying reminders?
I avoid that. Try this link there you could download their free version. I don't like using the trial 'coz then you have to switch it to the free version.
I am downloading the free version directly, no trial, and I'll come back and give you my opinion as a first timer.
Well, logmein is the only one I tried. Unfortunately, you can't drag and drop files with in free version, but the rest is really cool and functional. I guess I'll have to figure out how to transfer files in the easiest available way, any ideas? I'll try the first one suggested anyway.
How can you do that, there's a window telling the other user that the pc is remote controlled, right? Any alternative ideas to transfer files in the free version?
So the free version doesn't allow file transfers? I've just reinstalled XP on all my laptops and my desktop PC... and was all ready to try the free version of LogMeIn - but if file transfers don't work, then I'll just use UltraVNC over Hamachi. UltraVNC does file transfers no probs. ------ EDIT The free version of LogMeIn does NOT do file transfers. Which has just crossed it off my list back to good ol' VNC I guess...
I guess that someone can figure out how to get around that, but I couldn't come up with something simple yet. The only thing so far is transfer them via skype or similar. I don't know if the speed is even similar. The paid version is not that expensive though, I think that with $5 per pc you can have the version that allows that.
You can just run UltraVNC over a Hamachi connection. It's what I've always done - it works nicely, and you get ALL the features of UltraVNC (nothing is crippled!), which is one hell of an application. It takes a little more than a few mouse clicks to setup, but it's worth it Just install Hamachi on your 2 computers, and enter the Hamachi IP of which ever one is running the VNC server in the Ultra VNC config.
