When I click on C:, D:, E:, etc. from My Computer, I don’t see these hard drive contents, but I see this window saying “Open With”. Why is this happening? Why isn’t Windows showing hard drive contents? How can I solve this problem?

The following is what happens, when I click on C:

(please click on it to enlarge …)

Does this make sense? It doesn’t just open the hard drive C:.

looks like a recently installed program has installed an autorun.inf file into your c: drive.
Look for a file names autorun.inf in the root of your C: drive. If there's one there, you'll need to delete it.

    Start, Programs, Windows Explorer.
Single left click on the C: drive.
Look on the right side of Explorer for an Autorun.inf file.
If you see one there, right click on it, then select delete.

If this does work post back and we will try something else.

    There were two files:

    DUP1.EXE and
    YServer.txgt

I don’t know what they were doing, so I just deleted them. But … the problem still persists. What should I try next?

You are looking for a file called autorun.inf. Not any other file just that one. The two you deleted one looks like a virus the other is Yahoo saved ims. Find that file delete it reboot like 3 times so the registry fixes itself and you should be done.

Have you tried simply selecting Browse and choosing C:\Windows\explorer.exe ?

Then he would have all autoruns opening in explorer if there is one there. Have to make sure there is not one there first. That would have been my second suggestion if he did not have one.

Well, if I run command prompt, I see …

    AUTOEXEC.BAT and
    CONFIG.SYS

Should I do anything about these files?

NO NO NO leave those alone follow the instructions I posted and find the file. Do run a command prompt do it like i said to. Then reboot a few times and the registry will fix itself.

    I deleted both

    DUP1.EXE and
    YServer.txgt

and rebooted Windows three times, but no luck. Also as I check the root of C: from the command prompt, I only see …

    AUTOEXEC.BAT and
    CONFIG.SYS

Now what am I supposed to do?

Follow that to the letter find AUTORUN.INF not any other file. Leave the command prompt alone. Do it by the directions.

Update and run a virus scan. Do this immediately I see what else I can come up with.

It is a really good idea to back up the registry before you make any changes....That being said, what I am suggesting as a fix will change the ability for power or administrative users of your XP machine to modify the 'global' file associations.

    1. As the local adminsitrator on your PC, Run 'regedit' tool and dial down to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    2. right-click on the NoFileAssociate key, and select modify
    3. edit the "Value data:" field to 0 (zero)and select OK.
    4. the NoFileAssociate entry should now be:
    "NoFileAssociate" "REG_DWORD" "0x00000000(0)"
    5. Close the registry editor tool
    6. You may need to logoff and log back in to see the changes. Then modify your file associations through the GUI as per usual. Your edit options should no longer be grayed out.

Follow these instructions precisely do not skip anything and do not mess with anything else in there as this could mess up your machine totally. I normally tell people to stay out of the registry but this is the only way to fix it.

I think that it is a virus Or just try to format the disk once and the problem will be solved. I think that you have backup of all the data on the disks.
