ALEXA RANKING - Question finally Answered

Hello every1. I know many have been asking how alexa gets their ranking. Well I finally asked them since I had a concern about my site. And finally they gave me the answer. Here is their response:;)
    --------------------------------------------------

Thank you for contacting Alexa Internet.

Alexa bases all ranking information on the web usage of Alexa Toolbar users. We do
not have access to any web site's private usage logs. For more detailed information
about Alexa's traffic rankings, you can visit:

    http://www.alexa.com/site/help/traffic_learn_more

Now, as we said above, Alexa's traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of
Alexa Toolbar users over a rolling 3 month period. A site's ranking is based on a
combined measure of Reach and Page Views. Reach is the percentage of internet users
who visit a site. Page Views are the average number of Alexa user URL requests for a
site, per Toolbar user. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day
by the same user are counted as a single Page View. The site with the highest
combination of users and Page Views is ranked #1.

Please also note that sites with relatively low measured traffic will not be
accurately ranked by Alexa. Alexa's data comes from a large sample of several
million Alexa Toolbar users; however, we do not receive enough data from our users
to make rankings over 100,000+ statistically meaningful. (Conversely, the closer a
site gets to #1, the more reliable its rank.) This means that, for example, the
difference in traffic between a site ranked 400,000 and a site ranked 800,000 is
statistically negligible. Sites ranked 100,000+ are subject to large ranking swings
due to the scarcity of data for those sites. In such cases, a single user (or the
lack of one) can make a dramatic impact.

We appreciate your interest in Alexa.

    Best regards,
    Alexa Internet Customer Service

Thats right.,..and also an important poing. If your site is not in english...not a lot of people will use Alexa so its not reflecting a fair position.

What you learned from that is very simple.. Alexa rankings aren't worth anything!

Based 100% of the number of Alexa users that stumble onto your site, it isn't much, and doesn't count for squat if you're trying to sell a domain.

Pegeler, i totally agree with you on that. I mean, my website was ranked like 3.5 mil or something since it's brand new. so i started advertising, and in november i got over 3000 unique visits (compared to only a little bit over 100 in October). and guess what, my ranking went down from 3.5 - 6.5 mil. that's about 89% fall. what in the world does that supposed to mean? i mean one excuse one might give is b/c of the page views. well take a look @ this; in november, i received over 100,000 page views. isn't that's crazy. i mean with those numbers i should be some where at least close to 100,000 in ranking. but no. it became worse. i don't how. but it did.:)

I suffer the same. 3 years ago I was on 70.000 ranking or so...now I have multiplied my visitors and Im on 120.000...so Alexa is worthless..

Really sucks doesn't it. You know, I am really thinking about opting out of the rank. I read something on their page, that you can disallow their robot. so I am really thinking about doing that.

Well, t2000g, i have made some experiments in the last 5 months to see the "efficienty" of this system. Appear that not only traffic is an important factor, social bookmarking is also.

Oh yes. of course they are making the money. it just sucks for every1 else though who is brand new and trying to get advertisers. I mean i look at my site stats, and it says the Reach = 150% Up, Traffic Rank = 660,000. but then page views = 88% down. but i don't get it. in november i received over 100,000 page views as i've already stated. Here is a real look evey1: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/naavaa.com

Its a braggin right, just like PR both are useless. Its the traffic that counts and Alexa doesnt know who goes there and PR wont give you more customers....Wish people would get that in their head...its just a pi55ing contest

    Now i get it
that is why some sites having less number of pages can still have a higher alexa ranking
