So I wanted to can an idea before I start entering the domain market and I thought the members of DP would be a good place to ask..

My goal would be to make less profits on selling the domains and more customers, yet profit margins are small to begin with lol..

Please answer my poll it will help me decide if I want to enter this saturated market hehe.

Compare what you are offering versus the big domain registrars to see if you are even offering something decent. So look at godaddy, namecheap, moniker, and enom - those 4 seem to make up most of the domain name market these days.

Your offer beats Godaddy for the .com, they charge $9.95 plus $2.00 for privacy, but they have the brand and reputation.

You'd really have to see what you could offer to beat these guys and then have one hell of a marketing budget to compete against them. You're looking at needing alot of press releases and advertising to do it.

Depending on which country you are in, it might be better to register country specific domain names. For example, I'm up in Canada and all .ca registrations are handled by CIRA.ca, but anybody in Canada can create a registrar and use their API. CIRA doesn't sell the domains, they just manage them all. But there's some sites that sell .ca domains for $100/year (that's stupid), and most seem to sell them for $20/year, but I found a registrar that sells them for $10/year (sweet! - www.10dollar.ca) They don't do much advertising, but they beat everybody else on the pricing for .ca domains so they do pretty well. (I personally have about 40 .ca domains reg'd with them, but I use Godaddy for any .com's).

    I picked no..

I'll get my domains at godaddy or namecheap or one of the other well known brands.

Do you really understand what's involved?

    1) $2000 up front, non-refundable application fee.

    2) $2000 annual fee upon approval, plus standard 20¢ fee per domain sold.

    3) Certifiable proof of $70,000 in liquid assets available at all times.

If I had that kind of cash floating around, I could sure find a better way to make it work for me than to enter into the field as a newbie.

I admire your high targets to compete against the likes of godaddy but in all honesty i think its too big of a market for you to get your share in.

You would get crushed if you was to ever even make a dint in the market.

I would think on a much smaller scale for now my friend.

I actually know exactly what is required yet I have no idea where you got your figures? IT all depends on where you get the domains. Know I am not sure if I will do this but just ran across my mind I thought it would be a little fun to tell you the truth.

Anyhow guys thanks for the responeses

First of all, in order to sell Internet Domains, you must register with InterNic.

The dollar amounts posted are their fees as of yesterday afternoon! (12/14/07)

Any other form of domain sales not associated with the proper registration and authorization puts you in the category of the guy that whips open a rain coat and asks if you want to buy a watch!

I'm not slamming you for your ideas, I'm just telling you that there's one LEGAL way to do it, unless your an affiliate for some outfit that charges $8.95 and then gives you a percentage of the sales.

Of course you can be a RE-seller of domains that you purchase, then resell to others. I think GoDaddy charges about $100 a year for people that will be buying a ton of domains. Then you get a 30% discount on your purchases so you could resell 'em for $8.25 a domain and you'd make about $1+ per sale.

You can RESELL domain names that you have previously purchased all day long.
