What I think is that there is no need to submit your website in search engines. Let them include your website in their index.

What you need to do is to submit your website on a web page which is regularly indexed by Search engines like G, Y and MSN Live Search.

Your website will automatically be indexed then.

Yea that's good idea but local search engine get propagated lately, so better consider submitting your site manually for local search engine and directories rather than Google, MSN, Yahoo the big player.

I completely agree with you bob. What you can do is submit your site on to google and yahoo through their webmaster tool. Its free so u need not worry about being paid and there is no harm in doing that.

Let me know in case you need any help.

Try the IBP and Arelis Software, so you can submit your site to many search engines automatically.

One thing I would tell you, if you order from someone a directory submissions service is to pay really attention. On my last experiment after the penalization of directories, 90% of the directories were really worthless with broken links, filled with spam and ads, definitively a worthless directory. You can read more about this experiment on my directory submissions experiment.

Even tho directories can/will help a little for your SEO most of the directories are really worthless big time and don't even deserve the hassle and time to submit and verify your submissions.

In directories you get listed, but the search engine results for certain words or phrases link to the directories, not to your site. Even in feed sites directories, beware.

In my opinion you shouldn't use manual submit type, especially when you want be indexed by google. Add you site and sitemap with Google Webmaster Tools help and make some backlinks from other sites. That's the way which I prefer.

Submit your sitemap to Google and place the code on your home page (head) area. And Yahoo has paid submission and MSN has a way to add you as well.

You don't need to submit your site to the major search engines, they will crawl the web and find you automatically.

However here is a tool you can download and use to submit to 66 of the smaller engines, don't pay someone to do it.
