Google doesnt treat "SEO" and "Search Engine Optimization" the same. I rank on page 2 for "SEO" but pages back for the other.

As for best KW density, check what the top 10 are using and aim for an average of that and you cant go wrong.

Do a google search for "something".

    allinurl:something #1
    allinanchor:something #1
    inanchor:something
    allintitle:something # 1
    intitle:something # 1
    intext:something no good placement
    allintext:something no placement

Which basically means this example ranked without taking the intext factors like keyword density into the ranking.
For most people this enough to rank but if it where a more competitive keyword you would need all the factors to rank well...

Would be interesting to to a test to see how long it would take to place for "something"

As an SEO we have Different explanation what the exact density for a page. But for me I don't give more importance of it as long you will deliver your targeted keywords on a certain page thoroughly and instead of focusing on Density why we should not keep on focusing on Keyword Prominence...

Because Keyword Relevancy is very important in building a certain page...

Ok, here you are - Can you explain keyword density?

This article is by Dave Taylor who gets mentioned in this Google Webmaster Central blog entry, that credible enough for you?

Keyword density may not be an important factor or even taken on it's own as a factor but it matters. A page that's been keyword stuffed is an obvious attempt to spam and will probably get nailed with a 'content spam' penalty, so keyword density matters in the respect that you can have too many instances of your keyword although I would imagine placement has an influence.

Google might think that a 100 word article which uses a certain phrase 30% of the time is just a badly written article and will leave it alone to suffer the natural death it deserves. But if that phrase also occurs in the title, meta tags, headings, alt descs, italic text, bold text, image file names, a link or two...... it's content spam penalty time.

Therefore you should think about the percentage keyword density to make sure you're not over-optimising through placement or just writing piss poor content, next thing, you're working on keyword densities.
