Nope...bookmarking is not a long-term source of traffic and difinitely cannot help your site climb on top of google list.

Ummmm I would say you're off here a bit.

While social bookmarking alone won't get you to the top for competitive keywords, it can help for long tail terms.

In addition it helps by driving traffic to the site... and in order to rank well on Google... you need to have traffic and people clicking the URL.

In addition social bookmarking enable webmasters to develop their websites virally and as such as others link to the site the PageRank rises.

Social Bookmarking compliments the SEO methodology but won't boost rankings alone.

Social bookmarking has helped client sites gain Alexa ranking under 500,000 and has increased PR from 3 to 5 (not that I or the client care about those numbers but they are metrics) and has sites ranking for keyword terms with xxx, xxx, xxx competing pages.

    :)

Not true, because PR is quality links and many Social Bookmarkings (through deep linking) are of quality sites...but most of them are of nofollow....

I think it depends on your topic and type of social bookmarking you use. There are some SB sites that brings traffic in a few days only after you register but for the long run it sucks.

Well, it could be that way since the traffic to your website is not usually super targeted.

So let's think positively, you're getting the traffic for free, right?? :)

Yes, that's right. Some use nofollow so they don't help increase PR while others don't use nofollow. Most use nofollow.

Some social bookmark like Simpy and Reddit using "nofollow" to prevent someone spam on them (It doesn't work, actually) but many of them still be a direct link so it would give positive effect on your site. But your site must not have fully garbage or scraped content which should help your story removed so quickly and your account got banned so easily. Most of them have both auto and manually human reviews to control their quality.

Traffics from social bookmark has somewhat quality, especially from Digg but better for affiliate than adsense. If you have content which general interest for people and it's a quality content you can convert them with affiliate.

However, I suggest not to spam too many on social bookmark which can make your site a bad link profile in Google's eye. If you offers quality content to social bookmark you would get much more than spam.

Im not sure where this thread is going or w/e but IMO social bookmarks wont kill your Page Rank if you use them correctly.

Its people who try to cheat the social bookmarks that get in trouble, do things the right way and you will be fine!
