Am not saying it is best but from my experience you would be better off spending your time learning HTML/CSS and PHP so you have 100% flexibility and you are actually learning something valuable rather than putting lots of time into Joomla or any other CMS system.

Depends if that is what you want to do though, if the idea of playing with code is too daunting or sound too boring then stick with something like Joomla.

You can try looking for templates at compassdesigns joomla art rocket theme. Also take a look at joomla 1.5 rc3 competition templates. They are awesome and you could use one of those.

Joomla is awesome. It's not a perfect solution, but nothing is. None of the CMS's out there now will give you a better looking page than Joomla can. Almost as much third party development as Wordpress. The other solution I find interesting is Plone, but I haven't tried it. There's too much to keep me on Joomla, I don't think I'll be looking at any other CMS's for a long time.

And for all the Wordpress fanboys who are chiming in: yes, Wordpress is an excellent piece of software with a fantastic user and developer community. However, with the exception of a couple of commercial themes, I haven't seen a Wordpress blog that wasn't instantly identifiable as a Wordpress blog. 90% of the Wordpress blogs out there look amateurish. It's a big internet, but really, we don't need anymore Wordpress blogs. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting one.

The only problem with plone is that it needs root access. So one needs a VPS or a dedicated server to build a website on plone.
