Can a niche be TOO niche for Adsense ?

I am looking at starting a new niche web project in the New Year but am a little concerned that Adsense may not have enough targetted ads for the niche sectors I am in.

To my knowledge there is no search facility to see which advertisers/products/services are covered by Adsense so do I just take a leap of faith, spend days creating a new website and then pray Adsense insert relevant ads ?

I know it's possible to tweak the settings to allow Adsense to target certain keywords but is it possible for a niche website to be too specific ?

I would advise against taking any leap of faith. Use Google's Keyword tool to see how high the advertiser competition is. If it's high, Google will have plenty of ads to serve on your site.

Yeah, as mentioned above, the adwords keyword tool lets you show columns such as search volume and advertiser demand for the terms it is displaying.

This is great, though very "imprecise". It's hard to tell what exactly a partially shaded bar represents...

A niche can be too small for you to earn money - but if the keywords are right it'll display advertisers from other niches.

I don't think so. There are so many advertisers, there will always be someone who is willing to advertise on your site. Plus, if your niche is so small, then you probably won't have that many visitors, and won't need that many advertisers.

Throw up a plain HTML page with the maximum Adsense blocks and some sample content and see what displays.

Refresh the page, and even visit via proxy located in other countries to see the selection of ads displayed.

If you really want an idea of how many advertisers are in your niche, google search the main keyword your niche revolves around (ie. florida palm trees) and look for the sponsored search results at the top and right side of the SERPS page. Refresh the page a few times to see whether the ads rotate. If they do, chances are good that you've found a profitable niche.

    Thanks guys.

I use the google keyword tool on my current website but after your comments I suspect I'm not using it in the best way.

I have researched keywords that have a small to medium level of search traffic and which the advertiser's competition is low.

My reasoning behind this method was that if I go for the keywords with high competition from advertisers then a) I'll be paying more per click and b) I would find it much harder to breakthrough the competition to get a good listing.

Aim high, and then aim low. If you can manage to make your site rank for a competitive keyword, then try to get the smaller ones as well - so you can nab all the competition.
