DMOZ directory listing.....when?

I submitted my site the day it went back online on about the 8th of September. I am still not listed in the DMOZ directory. As I recall when I signed up it said it would take a month or two. It has now been more than three. How long does it typically take to get listed anyway? If you are declined, do they at least let you know?

it takes up to two weeks or more. More is defined as anytime after the two weeks till the end of time.

If you get declined, no, they do not let you know. They are not there to serve you, they serve the end use by not helping you serve the end user.

Assuming that you've submitted to the correct directory, then just move on and promote your site by other means. If you are afraid that you got declined, then just work on better content (I don't know what site) and try again...but then move on to other things.

You MAY see a listing anywhere between now and never.

DMOZ has had serious problems for several years. Most sites never get listed and like Qryztufre said, they do not notify you one way or the other.

The best case that I have experienced with DMOZ took over a year for the listing to be approved.

Just submit a site and forget about it. A listing may show up some day.

The fastest approval is 6 seconds which I think me when I used to edit and some other present and former editors. Approval upon submission. Provided they are really very good sites. :)

As for the present editors do some good deeds in the Regional Philippines as there are good sites to list. Heres one and about our national fish festival and about the native fish of the Philippines.

If you need help its in http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/Philippines/Provinces/Pangasinan/
    :D

Favors ? It's not even my site. The category has been in limbo. I think you have to Thank me Revr instead. If you don't then don't list. No biggie.

btw when I red rep i sign my name. ;)

What makes a site worthy or not worthy of being in the directory? Since all of my competitors are in there and I have been around longer than most of them, don't I deserve to be there too? Especially when you consider the fact that most of them are resorting to SEO "spamming" techniques, when I am just building my business on providing information to the end users.

So I noticed, you are so kind, but we can manage without any favors from you, I prefer red reps from people who have no respect for private forums. Did it make you feel big, giving a red rep, or telling of private material, like you felt you had found out the masonic sign in ODP?

Nightowl - I'm not being catty in this reply, so read this in an explanatory tone rather than one of the less acceptable alternatives. Dmoz lists websites, not businesses, so the decision to list or not list depends on the site's content, not whether your competitors are there or who has been around longer.

    Having said that I'll add
    • 1) There are a zillion sites out there, and I guarantee someone can come in here and show an example of a bad site that is listed or a great one that isn't. No system is perfect, ours or anyone else's.
    • 2) I haven't seen your site (and you didnt list a URL) so for all I know it is the penultimate king of content.

If your site fits the guidelines and has been submitted to an appropriate cat but not added, it is probably just the traditional problem that there's more to log on the web than there are editors at Dmoz. If that's the case, it's a manpower issue. The volunteers there do what they can, but the task is bigger than any number of editors could do and stay totally on top of. Feel free to hit the "Become an Editor" button if you want to try and be part of the solution.

DMOZ is a joke! yet it has power to make or break a small business website. The editors I don't think have a clue of the impact they can have. Let me take this response with only a sliver of the complaints related to DMOZ.

With all the technology we have, computers, websites, servers, networking etc it boggles the mind why a automatic response cannot go back to the submitter to say YES or NO and if NO at least an explanation WHY NOT! This is not the difficult.

    Lets think about it:
    - Editor views a submission in a browser and the submission has an email address.
    - why not have a yes or no radio button
    - then add a quick description field to describe if there is a problem
    - hit submit and the submitter has a chance to know whats going on.

I tell you if DMOZ could add this to their process for the Editors it would eliminate a large portion of the problems associated with DMOZ. This whole bit regarding a lack of communication is absolutely ridiculous. Take a look at this article we wrote a couple of years ago:

    www.smartfindsmarketing.com/articles.php?p=articles_dmoz_frustration

This organization has to be taken down and replaced with something that is more functional to help everyone.

You don't see? Everybody ask when?
Never, man! Just give up, like me!
Stop using this bullshit directory! Fuck them! We can live without DMOZ.

Ohh, man! That I want to say but I don't knew how. In my opinion they don't have any respect for the submiters.

Being in the technological world , where there are spam bots , which can read through captcha , submit unlimited number of sites within 15 minutes , and the cost of a domain and hosting going down to below 5 USD .... i can easily think of the reason , why theres no automatic response .

Again thinking objectively , the moment you have a Yes or No answer , the situation often does not end there ... if its Yes , maybe , but if its a NO ... you will probably get another series of questions - Why NOT and Who are YOU to judge .

As for, the Quick Description - How many of us probably give an answer "Why we don;t want to buy that 'fantastic weight loss product' , offered by the Telemarketer " , probably :p.

It seems this is the only way to guarantee inclusion, regardless of content, age of site, business etc. My site has better content than competitors, is updated regularly, is W3C compliant (I could go on....) But 2 years after submitting I'm still not listed.

I can't see it being long before it's lost all authority anyway, it seems the only people who don't know what a farce it is are the SE's!

I do not suggest brideing an editor, that will get them moving quick as can be...to ban your site.

They don't get paid, so it's an "at your own pace" type of thing. Some do a dozen a day, some edit once every three months (which is the minimum) most fall someplace in the middle.

You have a point, but I think is worse not to have an answer at all.

Like somebody said here, it is a dropdown list with automatic response, why your site is not good. If you have all these requirements done, please resubmit.

    This sounds more civilized.

Your welcome to come and use your technical knowledge, all for free like the rest of us, just hit the "apply to be an editor" button, have hours of free time to give away and hey presto you too can then really affect what happens in ODP, rather than spending you spare time watching soccer, basketball, football, playing with the kids. You too can waste it with we silly editors in ODP.

    Give it a shot?

    edit to add,
Oh dear tried and failed, no wonder you are upset, can't join Q to just get your site listed and leave. Never mind if the site is good enough it canl still be listed, we have many of the sites from webmasters who have been rejected listed, only thing that stops a site being listed is if you spam, try to bribe or the site is just plain not good enough.

I have to agree that no response is worse then some response. Lets forget my idea of having a description for a "No" answer. Phase 1 - lets communicate something instead of nothing at all! A yes or no answer on its own would be better than nothing at all.

Also, becoming a editor - what in the world will that accomplish? Are you suggesting that by being an editor you have access to someone that will actually facilitate making changes to the ODP application for editors? If that is the case, I think we should all sign up to become editors!
