Alexa rank vs compete.com ranking

For one of my sites, the Alexa.com rank has plummeted to like over a million. For the last 10 years + the ranking has always been between 50k - 200k. When I check Compete.com, the ranking has improved like 56% last month. My raw logs shows a significant increase in traffic too. Is Alexa going haywire or something?

Where does compete.com get their stats? Alexa uses a toolbar. Do they do the same?

Their site looks nice... but I don't know about accuracy. It had Yahoo.com having more traffic consistently across the board than google.com.

um, thats just yahoo.com, google.com is just one of googles names, never mind google.ca (which is ranked 64) google.fr (ranked top 100 also) google has a couple top 100 spots with their seperate domain endings.

Compete is generally more reliable than Alexa.

OKAY, very strange thing, i received like 3000 unique visitors in the month of November, than any months I have had my website running (it has been around like 3.5 months now), and my alexa ranking went down 89%. Doesn't make any sense. How does some explain this. This is certainly bad for me, as I have been trying to improve my site. Yaka!

alexa is a fickle beast, they need to have another way than just their toolbar (maybe strike a deal with google and the other SE's to put their toolbar hidden in the other SE's toolabars, or something at least).. just my 2 cents.

the reason why alexa dont appear in the alexa listings is that the toolbar doesnt return it as a location....

just going to take a look at compete.com - Ive never heard of it either, which kind of leads me to beleive that its not very well know....

    Its another toolbar based site::

    Compete Toolbar
The Compete Toolbar automatically creates three alerts for every web site you visit:
With the Compete Toolbar you receive a snapshot of every site you visit:
Trust Trust Scores help you experience a safer web by warning you of potentially malicious (spyware, phishing) web sites
Site Profile Site Profiles tell you how popular the web site is, its rank, and how fast it is growing
Deal Deal Light automatically lights up if there are any special promotions or coupons that can save you money on the web site

Compete uses a very crappy "estimate" of web traffic, it butchers the estimation on all of my sites. They have a code you can insert within your site (kind of like Analytics' code) that tracks everything. I was considering to use it, but I don't know how much of an extra load it will put on the site.

Also, it is rather popular, next up is Quantcast...

Seriously this is the first time I've heard of compete too.

    And personally, I'd prefer Alexa.
