Not really. Still mac hardware. Subjective rather than fact. Not really, they get thrashed by a Dell Latitude in terms of build quality. Nothing of huge note seems to have come out of it, though. The latter, sort of. No one touches my laptop, or they die! Why bother when I can get better hardware and the same software on a pc? Webservers are different, they won't suddenly become outdated because some company decides that their software needs 5 billion gigs of RAM to run. Schools here use pcs far more widely than macs Macs have greater idiot-proofing. Here's a situation: On a pc: "Click here to get anti-virus software" displayed in a large flashing banner ad, user clicks, downloads the software and gets a virus On a mac: "Click here to get anti-virus software" displayed in a large flashing banner ad, user clicks but the virus doesn't work on mac. What graphics cards do you use for those? High-end graphics cards mean lots of heat, compact case means small fans. No thanks, I need my laptop for work . I don't imagine you'll be doing much useful graphics work with a 7 year old mac. Comparatively, my 18 month old Dell Latitude D610: 2GHz Pentium M, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 80GB Hard Drive. I don't particularly feel the need for unnecessarily replacing a laptop.
Yes, really. Thats the point. Check craigslist.org I was talking about functionality, not case resistance. Because it is free It gets noted if you have to pay for it. Heh You cannot get the same software on a pc as on a mac. Schools go for a cheaper investment over a reliable one, even when they have millions to spend. Exactly I dont run any antivirus Try imagining harder. When you do, get a mac.
I'm not longing for one, so I don't see having a better computer a loss. Which means lower performance and build quality as well as being stuck with Apple. What models were involved? That, to me, is functionality. Bette performance is functionality, the ability to carry it around without worry of damage is functionality. Functionality, in my eyes, means that it's useful. Unfortunately, Apple don't seem to see that. And what sort of things do they include other than bug fixes? I can't imagine they include major new features every month. You can almost always get the same or an equivalent on a pc. Not from my experience, it's what everyone else uses that seems to count for them, certainly in the UK. I'll admit to that one, which is one of the advantages of OSX (which I would rather like to dual-boot on my laptop I don't blame you, being a mac user you don't need it. I can image it crawling by at snails pace, but that's about it. Perhaps, if they bring out one that fills the niche I need.
Hmmm, just got my Macbook Pro yesterday. After a few solid hours with OSX (Leopard) I have to say it's quite amazing. It's hard to explain but multi tasking just feels so much more fluid, and it's definitely faster than ANY other Windows laptop I've used ever. The hardware may be less powerful, but OSX is far more optimized, so it is actually faster.
Get an amazingly well-equipped Macbook Pro. It will replace all those for gaming. Santa Rosa NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Up to 2.6ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Up to 4gb of RAM. Price range? (remember the excellent base 15" is £990. £1,230 to £1480 (maxed out 4gb RAM from if from crucial)
Compare that offering (Which, I must admit, is good and rather better than I expected) to the offerings of Dell or Alienware: Latitude D830 Intel Core 2 Duo T7800 (2.6GHz/4MB/800MHz) with nVidia Quadro NVS 140M 4.0GB, 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM Memory Price: £1,098 Alienware Area-51 m9750 Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7600 2.33GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB Dual 512MB Nvidia® GeForce™ Go 8700M GT 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MH Price: £1,976.35 - Knock it down to merely a single graphics card and a 2.16GHz processor and you'll get it for £1,548.65 Now that's what I call a gaming machine
I think I just demonstrated in my above post that Dells are superior to macs in nearly every way apart from looks. You do also realise that you were replying to a post 5 pages ago by a banned user?
With that Latitude, you don't get GeForce, which is key to having the ultimate gaming laptop. With the Alienware laptop (which was MADE for the soul purpose of gaming) you get pretty much the same specs for a higher price than a wicked nice Macbook Pro... This is rather interesting because Macs are considered poor for gaming. Time to flip that notion on its head.
i didnt eralize that... but no you can show specs all you want, dells just suck... i have used every level of dell from basic pc all the way up to their $xx,xxx servers and they are just troublesome, and dells support is very lacking
It's a business notebook, priced at around £400 less than the macbook Pro. Are joking in saying that an Alienware is pretty much the same specs as a "wicked nice Macbook Pro"? Did you miss the higher-end graphics card(s)? It's also a great example of the limits of a Macbook Pro; Even if you wanted to spend £4000 on an insane gaming machine, you couldn't. With a pc, you can spec a machine as well as you like as long as you can afford it. Macs are poor gaming machines, we're comparing here a top of the range mac with a downgraded pc. If you wanted to get better, you couldn't. Are you sure you have actually used them? The Latitude and server support is incredible, this site runs of Dell servers!
Another thing is the mac at the price of the alienware offers less features than the alienware at a lower price.
Dells support is very good, I have used their basic tech support and their gold complete care support and have been satisfied with both
yeah, it sounds like some of you have had good experiences... every single one of my experiences have been very bad considering in all the clients we worked for have spent over 15,000$ each on a small business server, they try to oversell, they ship the servers configured wrong, which results in several workdays of reconfiguration, they send the wrong stuff, and worst of all they send it and will not accept returns after they are damaged as a result of the poor shipping, we had one where a forklift went through the side and dell refused to take it back
I have never had a problem with Dell's tech support either; they've provided great support for both of my Dell laptops. That being said, I'd never buy a Dell PC, because no OEM can match a custom built PC for quality.
Dell's customer support is great, the quality of their computers, well at least their laptops in my experience is ...eh... apple pays a lot more attention to design. My macbookpro (which I gave to a friend uggh) had only one issue, it tended to overheat, but tha was remedied by adjusting the fan speed.
