Yep - the kids want to surf myspace, facebook and such when they are in computer class. They already email and chat in class. Would you feel unethical in aiding them or does it really matter. After all this is America and those kids that want to complete their work will and the ones who want to waste the entire time will --- still, let's put all that reasoning aside for a moment. Do you feel that proxy sites for that purpose are ethical or not? Thanks for your views Maybe the fact that i have to ask is a pretty good indicator of how i feel - but i haven't really made up my mind on the issue - hopefully you can help
I brought this question up at webproxytalk and the general consensus is that providing the service is not unethical or immoral, its the individuals responsibility to determine how to spend their time not mine.
It's the students that go find the proxies, not the proxies that find the students. I don't believe it's a problem of ethics > It's really the school policies on filtering etc. Proxy webmasters are out there making money, I don't think they are really concerned if their customers are wasint their time playing games etc. Privacy and proxies on the other hand, is an issue of ethics
Thanks for both your replies - really It hasn't been long and i bet someone will chime in with "It's the students that go find the illegal drugs, not the illegal drugs that go find the students" argument. And we wouldn't want to sell those. I have a teenager and i really tend to side with the line of thinking that the kids can work and play both during class - it happens all the time. Balance is a good word and a good concept. On the other hand you can paint a good picture for either case and feel entirely right about it. In the end, just talking about it with others, helps you really examine it better than you would have by yourself, it helps you come to a conclusion. Thanks again
I personally live my life by the Wicca law. An it harm none, do what ye will (sorry if I messed it up, but that's the general idea). Letting them surf myspace causes no direct harm and I feel that it is better to offer a safe proxy and make a little money than to let the school irrationally block them. I also know that most of the filters the schools use are ridiculously ineffective. Playstation.com is an arcade site? Newgrounds is "tasteless and offensive"? (Well, alright it is, but they don't even label the Nazi websites that) It's not a question of true ethics. Just what the overall effect is. It harms none and it is legally right. It isn't my problem from that point onward.
