Create Directory on site to increase backlinks?

A question for those more experienced than me (most on here then)

Is it beneficial to create a directory on your site to increase backlinks and push the SERPs results up?

I have a real estate / property site say "property.com"
most of the pages are either PR3 and PR2
I have 9 backlinks in google and 700 in yahoo
for the keywords i'm after it ranks about 15-25 in google serps.
I would like to increase the SERPs result to 5-10.

I am submitting links to directorys, articles etc the results are slow.
If I create a directory on the site. one that requires reciprical links. it could be hosted at "dir.property.com". I could keep it in this niche so that it would not become a general directory.

would it benefit the sites SERPs and PR to create a directory?

If you are having a directory where you link to others and they dont link back, then it's not going to help you. If they link back then you will get some benefit, but not as much as if it were not reciprocal. However, since in your example you would be making a subdomain that will not help your main site at all since the search engines treat subdomains as entirely seperate entities.

Creating a successful full directory would require a lot of time and effort and promotion and possibly money. Also, putting it on a subdomain would reduce the benefit.

A much easier and possibly better alternative would be to create a single "other reources" page within the main site, such as property.com/resources.html. You could put a few useful one-way links on it to get it started, and then try to get some link exchanges with other sites.

I gave up on having my own directories because most people dont want to reciprocate and so the results were minimal.

ok i get it so subdomain would be treated as seperate site by search engines. I would need to work at building links and PR on that.

BUT, would that mean if the backlinks were to the main site it would not look like reciprical links?

    E.G.
my link to others sites would be on "dir.property.com"
they would link back to "www.property.com"

does this make a 3 way link instead ??

it seems like it would be worth the effort to develop this IF the backlinks are given MORE weight as they are not considered recirpical.

one site that i know does this is www.r-tt.com, they have a web directory on a subdomain and they are top of the serps for their title keyword.

it would be worthless unless your directory is hosted on a separate server - also, it will take a lot of work to get the directory moving. In all it might be taking a lot of unnecessary time away. It's better to just write articles and register on free dofollow blog sites, and just promote the hell out of your site. Even though this route takes time, it will be much less than having to promote your site + a brand new unranked directory.

Why you all says this is not good??? You can ask them a backlink to your website and not your directory website... Some directory scripts allow this.

pretty interesting topic and i am learning something, and some are right if you use your sub domain and people going to link to you and others will not give reciprocal links it wont help thats my point of view

Yes it does. Although using the same ip for both, it might minimize the benefit e.g. - you link to them from 111.111.111.111 and they reciprocate to 111.111.111.111

inbound links are what will help your site not more outbound links. By submitting to directories and posting articles you are doing the right things. Serps don't happen overnight - it takes a dedicated and consistant approach.

You need to pay attention to the quality of the directories and article directories you are submitting to. If they are free you will generally get the results you pay for. Use quality directories and article directories and you will get better results in a fraction of the time.

    swedal,

yes i understand the need for quality submissions, i am doing these also.
my question about the directory is one which i hope will get me more backlinks from other sites in my niche.
as i hope to get many more backlinks the directory will also help me organise my links without it looking like a messy reciprical links page.

can anyone recommend a directory script?

I asked EXACT same question like 2 weeks ago, and I decided to dumb the project. Its useless and very hard to gain any profits out of it.

sandrodz, i'm not looking to charge for the directory and not looking for short term profits. i'm aiming for long term benefits of having much more backlinks from sites in the same niche.
