i want to create a new website about a particular topic, and know i have two options:

    - create a blog on the topic
    - create a static website on the topic

i am aware that blogs take alot of continuous work, writing new content daily, and i am attracted to the less continous work of a static website (once it is built up, and good SEO), however it would be more difficult to monetise (want to use reviews, as well as more conventional revenue streams)

what do people think i should go for and why?

i could always build up a blog, write articles once a week, and schedule them to appear at certain times, and then once the blog is popular, and i am running out of newer things to say, i can sell it on.

or, set up a static site with all the articles in, market it, optimise, market again... sell on, or keep as a revenue source.

    whats your opinions and why?

I think if you use blog with mod rewrite, SEO should not be affected much, static will mean a lot of extra work if you are updating regularly.

if i was to make it static i wouldnt update anywhere near as regularly... would a blog be more likely to get popular quicker?

i would probably do two posts a day, one being more important relevant information, and the other being still relevant, but not as important, as its quite a niche.

like, try and have extra features, like polls, interviews, reviews, and offtopic funny videos just to make it seem popular, but without using up all the ideas quickly.

some plugins can make your blogger life easier, but not about this i'm talking about , who want's modify every page of a site when you add a new page and upload everything every time you make changes ? you simply write when you have something to write but if you write more earn more... traffic is more easy to bring to a blog because you submit every article you wrote... and bloggers with more experience can tell you more about...

if i was to do a static site i would probably power it with joomla or something similar, or use SSI's to have the navigation and things in.

would it be possible to create a blog, and after a while, if its not too successful, and iv run out of things to say, convert it to a normal website (still using the wordpress software, but with a static homepage etc.?) this is, if my traffic is from SE and none is repeated traffic/subscribers.

Yes, that is possible. You could remove the dates from the posts and either let the home page stay the same or you could create a page and set your blog to show that page as the home page.

I am involved in a project with one of my sites to do the opposite. It was a static html/php site. I am converting it to a WP blog. I do not plan to change the existing pages - all those pages are still there and linked to, but all new content I add will be through WP.

Here is the new format http://www.honestinformation.com

Here is what the original homepage looked like http://www.honestinformation.com/index2.php

It was fairly easy for this site. I took the original home page and created a 'page' with WP using the same content. I then added my own banner and footer to let it blend in with the rest of the site.

I have removed index2.php to avoid duplication

    I voted for the blog.

What I really recommend though is to power it with WordPress, but set it up whatever way you want. Your WP site can look the exact same as a static site and you can update it with the same infrequentness.

But with WP behind it, you have the option to do whatever you want really. No limits. :)

pretty damn good idea, i could always instead of having it as a blog, have a latest updates, for the frontpage?

then it is possible to change it bit less frequently, but also make changes easily, having a cms behind it.
