It;s likely been asked a million times, so point me in the right direction (dont tell me to google, cause thats why I came here, haha)....ty.

Well, your best bet would be to start building quality backlinks. Make sure they are on sites related to yours, sport site niche is probably close enough. Use the keywords\phrases you want to rank for as your anchor text. This is the first step to ranking well in SERPs. With your site being only 3 weeks only I would expect much results for the next 6 months, your site needs to mature and backlinks need to mature as well. In time you can reach your goal.

You'll then want to create pages on your site with relevant unique content. So if you want to rank for Steelers tickets, you have a page named steelers-tickets.html (.asp, .php, etc..). Then create lots of crawlable content around the theme of steelers tickets on this page. Include photos with steelers tickets in the file name and alt tag. You don't want to make it spammy, but you do want to make sure your page has a focus and LOTS of content.

You should read threads before posting, he was asking about ranking on Google, the information you gave is something I would tell someone interested in ranking with Yahoo, Google is more about backlinks, in fact I have high ranking keywords (#2 - #4 w/25m+ results) with sites using NONE of those techniques and mostly backlinks.

Show me a site that you have ranking highly for a competitive keyword that doesn't have good crawlable content and is ranking purely because of backlinks. And I'm not talking about bombing the index for rankings for a couple of days. I'm talking about long lasting legitimate rankings.

You called me out once before and when I provided evidence to back up my claim you never responded in that thread or to my private message. I'm not sure what your problem is with me.

Oh and you should read before posting as well. I clearly started my post after yours stating "You'll THEN..." meaning I wasn't disagreeing with your suggestion, but telling him next steps after he did that.

    http://www.nowthatshumor.com

    #2 Funny Pictures 25,000,000+ results
    #4 Funny Pics 10,000,000+ results

Would you like more sites or this enough for you? Again, your information pertains to Yahoo and not Google, stop trying to raise your posts and backlink count via DP.

I've ranked on the top page for Funny Pictures since Janurary 2007 and held the #2 position daily via US data centers for over 3 months and counting.

Hahhaah, is that what you think I'm doing? I have absolutely nothing to promote. Show me a single link I've promoted? Get off the high horse dude.

Congrats on the high ranking, but you have over 1,500 pages indexed in google. you don't think this has anything to do with your results? And scroll down on your home page and what do I see......Content! You mention the term "funny pictures" not once but 30 times on your home page alone! you do a great job of SEOing your site, but please don't tell people that backlinks are all that matter to Google.

Oh and at least I don't ignore the thread when you post your information to back up your claims like you do in my posts (and my private message to you). I'm here to learn and to help others, again I'm not sure what your problem is.

Oh and speaking of trying to increase post count (whatever thats worth). I'm not the one who's been here for 3 months and already has over 2000 posts).

I ride an elephant forget the small horse... :p

Anyways, your right you don't promote links with a little research, I strike back that comment, I'm just use to people doing that and its a common response. The backlink method is still "the best" way to rank well on Google and by using your suggestions it would help even more, but would help much more on Yahoo, not Google, but WOULD have weight towards Google. His main question was about Google.

I don't agree with that, you can get good search engine rankings in 1 month, its all about the work you put in and number of backlinks. I've got a site that is a month and a half old and is already starting to rank well for a competitive keyword, but like ssandecki said building backlinks is the place to start and make sure you use the keyword you want to rank for as the Anchor Text.
    Good Luck :)

Well thanks for owning up to that at least. :p I really don't have an agenda. I work for a large SEO but they can do their own sales, I don't need to drum up business for them. I'm here to learn and to help others like I said.

But again, I never disagreed with your original statement, I was just pointing out what he should be doing after what you suggested.

Really, with in a month? Was the domain bought or freshly registered from a registrar? I'd like to see the domain and keywords too, I've yet to really see any site pick up fast via SERPs under 3 months. If you don't mind sharing the information that would be great and I could change the way I approach my replies to new sites.

    Hi guys

sorry to get drawn into this, but ssandecki said he was going to PM me some ideas yesterday which never happened. I just been checking on some of your "quality backlinks" for nowthatshumour.com and it appears half of them are from stumble upon and the rest are a jumble of webmaster forums and sites that rate your page rank. Hardly what I would call quality links, you may feel differently though.

Maybe you should check my links via Yahoo, which still won't display them all. Do you even know how the link: operator pulls backlinks? Yes, I did say that and its in there with my MANY other private messages, with this response you won't be getting any ideas now.

Jumble of webmaster forums eh? I only post on DP and Sitepoint, do you consider that a jumble? Considering I have 103,000+ external links according to Google Webmaster Central I'm sure you viewed the penny of the million.
