Can I add affiliate links to an article I found in a directory?

No, if you use someone else's article, you must keep their author bio box intact with their links. What you should do is write a product review for whatever it is you're promoting and that way you can put your own link in. But most article directories only allow links in the bio box, not all throughout the article.

    Hope this helps,

What are you doing with the article? Are you posting it on your site? If yes, this is not a problem provided you keep the content intact and the resource link of the author intact.

BUT to be sure, check the TOS of the article directory. Most authors would not really mind as long as their author resource link is there.
