I have been told by 2 people that being in front of a monitor screen for a long time can really hurt your skin, and even burn it. And they weren't just average people, one is a dermatologist, and another one is in charge of a hair removal center, so this is kind of scary since I spend at least 10 hours 7 days a week in front of my PC. Any of you have any info about this? I can't use one of those special filters because my video card is not working well and my monitor is really dark, if I put up a filter I won't be able to see a thing
Did this apply to all monitors including LCDs? I do almost 15 hours a day 6 days a week in front of mine! And I have noticed lately I have dry skin but I thought it was just the cold weather!
What kind of screens are you talking about? CRT? LCD? Plasma? -- I haven't heard of any of this before, but I would be interested in it too, since I spend most of my day in front of a monitor as well.
CRT monitors are bad for your eyes (your eyes weren't designed to focus on light). But it's temporary... once you stop using it, your eyes recover. Best thing to do is get an LCD if you spend a lot of time on the computer. I've never heard the "skin" issue before though.
Best case: I get a tan Worst case: My skin is damaged an extremely tiny bit I think if this is serious, we would already know about it. I'm not going to stop using a computer because I'm worried about my skin.
I agree with that. my LCD is much brighter and looks much better than my CRT monitor. I use both because I have dual monitors, but my LCD is my primary monitor. I highly recommend LCD monitiors as well, they look a lot better.
I hope I AM getting a bit of radiation from my various monitors... that may help counteract this pasty-white "studio tan" I've been getting from my hermetic, webmasterly existence this past year. Remember when they unmask Vader at the end of Star Wars part VI? That's me.
I use my laptop most of the time which has an LCD screen. It doesn't worry me much. Most people in the future will probably use LCD screens anyway.
In the future most people will either use holographic displays or direct cortical interface. And we will all have flying cars.
You're right, but I was referring to the next five years. And flying cars? I can see the accident statistics now. Its going to suck when you're at home having dinner when suddenly a flying car flies through the wall into your living room.
Yeah, but who said we'll be living in houses at that point -- I'm thinking outter space...with steel walls...ya know, the works
Fryman in Canada and northern US, in the winter months the small kids are told not to stick their tongues on cold metal as your tongue will stick to it? Are you engaging in sticking your tongue in restricted areas of your monitor?
ha ha... now that we are discussing those kind of myths I remember when I was a kid I was told not to swallow chewing gum because it would stick to my stomach Scared the crap out of me and I always got nervous when I chewed gum
the best analogy I used to use was: CRT ( Cathode Ray Tubes ) is like light shooting in to your eyes, because light is being projected to the front of the screen. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is light waves moving side to side and not directly being emitted straight at you. I'm sure this can get more technical and should really look in to it. LCD for ease on eye strain.
When you buy CRT monitors, chose a model with high frequencies like 100HZ if available, or use filter screens.
Actually it's my first time to hear about this. I haven't really notice 'cause I'm using moisturizer everyday. But I'm sure you're going to damage your eyes if you stay in front of monitor for long hours.
Well like someone said before CRT monitors are bad for your eyes and when it comes to TFT or LCD monitors they're OK I guess. All monitors and electric devices produce some amount of electromagnetic radiation but I'm sure that TFT monitor produces a lot less that old CRT.
