it is meaningless if the votes would not affect the serp.

digg or the other social bookmarking sites will not effect your serp

I doubt they will be able to control that. Webmasters are going crazy even with limited "techniques" like backlinks and PR. Now imagine if you will be able to influence DIRECTLY SERPS, even for just a little bit. That could be the greatest mistake by Google.

I give a 99.9% guarantee that Google are not even considering such a feature, at least for their main page.

I agree Philopoemen , this will not see mainstream use because of abuse potential.
Nice find though thanks for the link.

some people are already mass abusing programs that have complicated captchas, abusing this new possible factor in google's algo would be much easier

Exactly my point. There is no way google could control user voting... This would create a huge amount of communities that sell votes, and that's something that they don't like.

Yea, but this is just a sign of what's to come. It may not affect the general serps now, but what about when they roll it out "for real"?

It will only effect your account (I-Google) not the whole SERPS, that would just be silly.

This is yet another great innovation from Google Labs. I hope to see this new criteria become part of the permanent ranking algorithm. Now more than ever, it's important to embrace the power of the people and have them help with the ranking of websites. I'm predicting a full rollout in the first quarter of 2008.

If there were a way that such a system could be used, and not be exploited, then I think it would be a great thing for Google. How many times have you come across sites ranking high in the SERPs that have little or nothing to do with what you searched for ??

However, I really can't see how such a system would be regulated. I mean, you could picture competitors clicking each others results all day long, to try and do damage.

But, and this is a big but, if a system similar to this, where user input can be used fairly and honestly with regards to which sites offer real quality content and which offer pure crap - then I would really welcome such a thing.

Ineed it is a way for Google to make a better user experience and what better way than to let the user control their own serps not to affect total serps just the serps they see..It will happen
