Dmoz editors mainly wont be paid. The meta editors are sooooooo quick to kick you out for it.

Just get the title and description right and.....pick the right category

tip: Choose a small category first, they generally have less of a backlog

What niche is your website? I found the best and easiest way to get a site listed in dmoz is to create the site, add a few keywords throughout related to a specific area (eg. "Based in Manchester, England, XYZ are the best web hosting service provider in the country") - this way your site will be seen as region-specific. Most regional sites are added within a month or two, and are rarely reviewed.I did this with a site just after the 2006 disaster and i'm still in it, even though the site no longer mentions where the site founder is based :D

Or build a quality website, with real content, not made for Adsense or affiliate programs - made to provide top-notch information, services, links, or whatever.

My advice would be, dont worry about dmoz, it really doesn't matter if you dont get listed on it. If you do find a dodgy editor who will take money from you, then who says that they wont do something dodgy in 6 months time by deleting your site for no reason.

Is a DMOZ listing not as important as they used to be?

A few years ago everyone was saying it was a vital place to be listed, I hear that a lot less now?

I've read peoples claims that their are "crooked editors" but I really doubt it. If you try to pay an editor you'll probably just get the url banned for sure.

And for those who have read about the offers on scriptlance.com, it's just directory submitters offering their services.;)

ronaldmentalos ignore all PM offers of assistance that include payment. Your site will likely be banned, as there are editors lurking for threads such as this one.

Paying for a listing will 9 times out of 10 result in a banned site or a banned editor. That is if you are paying specifically for a listing. If you are paying for general link building and/or SEO work however you could pass through the system with flying colors. It is a very iffy system and while SEO work is within the ODP rules, bribes are a sure fire way of a permanent ban from the directory, not only that, they reserve the right to remove all other sites that you own!

If you are looking for a review or some pointers as to wheter your site is listable or maybe some assistance in figuring out why it's not listable, then check out this forum: DMOZ Site Reviews: Does your website qualify?

That is the best way to serve the end user, and yourself in the long run as well.

No, not really, though many SEO bloggers looking for additional content, and some editors may say that it's even better then it was. Though looking at the facts of the matter it looses it's massive hold a little bit more every day. Google rarely updates its clone, and many other search engines have stopped using the data all together (including AOL & Netscape for the better part
, and they own the ODP!). The only true value other then a link is Alexa, but then, other then webmasters, who really uses Alexa?

It is still well worth the few moments to submit a site, though once the site is submitted then forget about it. If it gets listed, it gets listed, if it doesn't then it doesn't. The suggestion feature is just that a suggestion, and the editors are not even required to read them, and they never (ok, rarely) bother to reply to whether a submission was accepted or rejected. So in many cases forgetting to submit is the same as submitting and forgetting.

In the end treat it like you would any other 'free directory' just submit your site and move on to the next one.
