The truth is the OP is right, and oh well, it caused a debate. I have always found debates worthwhile because everyone here has different opinions, experiences, or methods. What works for one person might not work for another, be it follow through, product chosen, etc. I own only 2 sites myself, but my account has a free unlimited sub-domains option. Using longtail, you can do a lot, and I have, and of my re-directed sub-domains to affiliate ID, I have made a good living and I have no problems sharing the info. (Most DP'ers know me anyway.)

As an example, 1 article I wrote and posted across a few green friendly sites had a link to a green friendly web hosting company...you think the only people that are green friendly are individuals? Nope, companies are too. They need the press, or want to jump on the band wagon to save the environment. (Good for publicity for them as well.) I am the webmaster for 2 (not mine) large environmental sites in Ontario, and have been for a while, so it is a cause I promote personally and have no moral problems including my affiliate link to them within posts.

Long story short, do a quick search with your favorite keyword tool, long tail the results into sub-domains with your affiliate ID for the product you just submitted an article about. And watch what happens...money in your pocket. Writing an informative article pays off, do 10 a day using the same method, what do you think will happen?

    '

1st you are posting supposed work with article marketing which we were not discussing.

The discussion revolves around whether or not the Google Content Network produces the outlandish results the OP claims.

I asked for proof .....here is what we received

    Your proof NONE

    OP Proof NONE

    My Proof 100%

    Google + search network

    Clicks 288

    Impressions 17,892

    CTR 1.60%

    CPC £0.46

    Total £132.34

    Position 9.0

    Content network

    Clicks 749

    Impressions 183,559

    CTR 0.40%

    CPC £0.40

    Total £298.76

    Position 4.7

As can be seen by the "proof" above the Content Network performed terribly.

Using the search side of Google we see at lower position we have a much higher CTR% at almost the same CPC as the content network and at a much better total cost.

    ;)

I manage $1mil monthly Adwords spend and have been doing this type of work for over 3 years both nationally and internationally.

The content network sucks 95% of the time... plain and simple....

My thoughts on the last post is, thank you for providing proof. It was probably helpful with those that have the same budget. The reason I answered the way I did about affiliate marketing, is because it is necessary to also ensure that whatever you are selling is seen, and article marketing (or frankly, anchor linked directory submission) is the way to go. It provides needed back links, which we all know is needed for SERP's, and it also gives exposure. What you should know is even though my post count is low, I've spent more time learning SEO than can be counted on a clock, and one of the things I sell on my secondary site places #1 in the big G and I make great revenue from it. I provide info and a service and that is what is most important.

OK but you know nothing about the budget... or in what time frame

You totally missed the 1/2 million ad impressions.... so I am fully conversant in the need to be found online.

As for SEO results Wonderful for you!

Oddly enough I have over 500 keyword terms listed on Googles front pages and my clients probably all together have over 10,000 many # 1 2 or 3
Some for over 4 years straight....

I am the # 5 author on seochat.com all time and I haven't written for them in almost two years ;)

So now that we're done thumping our chests about SEO we can get back on topic....

I stated prior for most webmasters whether you spend $10.00 per day or $10,000.00... the Google Content Network delivers very poor results for most advertisers.

    Peace!

    SEM-

So you are saying Google content network sucks for PPC? Maybe I am getting the terms incorrect. Are you saying if I decide to do Adword buys that I should only buy the non-content network channels?

True, and you can also learn and probably much more of ads that are not displayed. I surely don't want to do the same thing everyone else is doing, where's the edge in that?

The content network may not work for you, but it does for many other advertisers. I find that the competition on the content network is only growing every day and obviously that means its working for most people, otherwise why would they spend their money on it?

Personally, I have a few campaigns that run only on the content network. for the same phrase to show on the search network I need to pay 1500% more, yes thats right!!! In that margin I can have a MUCH lower conversion rate and still have a 200% ROI.

You are giving away some secrets here. That was an awesome post. Its true exact models often don't have an exact keyword that is being targeted, which is odd and uncanny, allowing small time webmasters to cash in on it.

Great info. I'm a newbie to affiliate marketing. I'm web developer but I really want to make money from the internet using other different ways like this one.

    Thanks a lot!

Hi Jason, thanks for the great info.

I have a question. in the example you gave on the "Samsung LNT4661F 46 inch HDTV", what sort of info do you put in the articles you write for the article directories? are they articles comparing the 3 products or is the article about the product in question (i.e specs, performance, etc)?

    Thanks

I sent you a PM please check.

    Hi Tony

First good to see a neighbor here, PA Rocks!!

I am saying it has not worked for me in over three years, I've run about 100 of my own campaigns, and 300+ for clients and it just fails miserably in comparison to Google search network only.

I will also admit I have failures just like everyone....

As seen by Hextra below it does work for others on occasion.

My biggest concern is blanket statements about what works for one person is not to say it will work for everyone else.

In addition having lost a small fortune to Google through the content network, and knowing many at DP cannot afford to lose anything...I feel that it is very important that an opposite set of results based on fact is needed...

    :)

Good stuff and I am very happy it is working for you.....that ROI makes me drool.

Keep at it if it's working.

I think your "proof" said it all. All you have shown is that the content network has a lower CTR. This is obvious and has very little to do with the quality of the traffic. The Convertion ratio (i.e how many clicks = a sale/lead) is more important than your CTR.

You don't pay on an impression basis (unless you do site targetting) and therefore a lower CTR doesn't cost you anymore - it just means you get less clicks per 1000 impressions. But as the Content Network is less competitive you usually end up getting a lot of impressions anyway - in fact in your example you ended up getting MORE clicks from the content network.

The real important fact here is that you spent "£298.76" on the content network - if you didn't make enough sales/leads from the content network traffic to make a profit that is when you need to adjust your content network bid (which you can set seperately).

You are paying £0.46 per click on Search, and £0.40 on content. If the content network was not profitable when you were bidding at £0.40 then lower your bid, tweak your ad copy, landing page until it is profitable.

Sometimes when you lower the bid you'll lose all the traffic as your ad position is too low - that is when you can safely say the content network probably won't work.

However, most of the time you will still get traffic at the lower price which will convert into sales - enough to make you a profit.

It is not rocket science, I'm not trying to "make myself look bright" as you put it - this is just common practice when using Adwords.

The content network doesn't work everytime, but I usually find it works well - and when it doesn't I just lower the bid until I am making a profit or the traffic stops.

If you don't beleive me then take a look at Prosumer. Making over $500 a day, and he has stated twice that the content network works well for him.

Hopefully if you follow through the above you will realize that the content can work very well.

I agree it doesn't work all the time and the quality is generally lower than the search network (but not always). What matters is your ROI and there are many occasions where you can get content network traffic so cheap that you will make a profit, even if the convertion ratio is low.

It is all about testing and tracking what works. You never know until you try it.

For anyone who wants to know google has some details on how to track content vs. search network traffic.

Hopefully this advice can help you get more money for your clients million dollar adsense account :D

Anyway all this is getting way off-topic - if you want to debate the content network do it in this thread.

This thread is about using article marketing to drive targeted traffic to a price comparison page.

If that is directed at me then I did not make a blanket statement that the content network works everytime. If I gave that impression I apolagise. I was more concerned with your statement that:
Because this is not true and I think you are already beginning to see quite a few PPC traffic brokers stating that the content network traffic works well for them. Your statement encourages people to ignore that content network - which in my opinion is a big mistake.

It is simply a case of testing for yourself what works - never leave a stone unturned because there could be a goldmine in the content network that you haven't discovered, simply because you could not be bothered to test it.

The content network doesn't work every time, the same as the search network doesn't work every time. If they did, we'd all be sitting back wasting our time counting endless flow of money... As I said many times before it's all a game of margins ...
