Here we go again, it’s very simple.............. Some site owners broke the rules myself included, as a result we were hit by Google. (Not just directories) As long as search engines count backlinks then directories will remain an important part of Seo. It’s all about change with some new rules to follow; I have noticed things are changing for the better with regard to directories. Don’t think about PR, and give a reason for people to visit “Content†is very important. One of my new directories that I have not announced is receiving lots of traffic, all my efforts are being spent on building something that will please my visitors and not the search engines. I have noticed a large number of sites linking to my content; I receive a good few email asking if it’s ok to publish some of my articles. I see this as a positive move. What’s PR again? Thanks Brian
As far as running the directory, I hate the business because of spam. And the spam keep coming. for each good link that I can approve I have to weed out 5 to 8 bad ones. I wish it is the other way around. --Which makes me think I am wasting my time.
If you are running bidding directories or using your sites to crosslink to all the ones in your signature here, then yes, you probably are.
why???what have bidding directories (except with the different ranking system) in adition with the other normal directories, especialy with the new features they have.IMO directories that have some quality editorials guidelines and they are well promoted wich ever concept they use there are not a waste of time
I've said all this before but I'll give it another shot. 1. If you run a bidding directory, you are announcing to the world that your listings/rankings have nothing to do with the quality of the site but are based on the principle of "the highest bidder wins". Why not just shortcut the whole process by (1) titling your directory "New Paid Links Farm" and (b) submitting your own site to Google's paid links report? 2. The notion that you can dress up a directory with articles, editorials, or any other content and somehow fool people or search engines into thinking that as a result your directory is worth any more or should be excluded from penalties is absolute crap. Hardly anyone uses directories for anything at all these days, with the except of a few specialized niche directories that actually do maintain quality control and selectivity in their listing, and those that might visit your directory don't give a good god damn about editorials - they just want to see the listings.
1. I was asked a direct question. I answered it. Do you have a problem with that? 2. The way most of you have been "running your businesses", you obviously need someone to tell you how to do it...
I dont have a problem with anyone or anything, judging by the amount of banning going on around the forums recently im aware to keep it friendly and respectable, so no, no problem with that. Regarding your 2nd point, if i were standing infront of you id possibly take offence, but seen as its just a post on a forum il choose to read it as a general comment that you throw out to the directory community. I wish i could understand what makes a man like yourself who if im honest, from your picture appears matured, experienced and intelligent, but still chooses to sling comments at everyone as if were all working in the same building or something. I will never have a problem with you because i feel you enjoy just dropping in from time to time to wind people up, so il leave you to it. I do learn from you, thank you, sorry to put out the argumentative fire though.
I'm not here to wind anyone up. I have opinions, often strong opinions, and when I do I state them, usually pretty directly. Add to that the fact that I am appalled by the amount of spamming, scamming, and get-rich-quick schemes I see here, especially in the Directories forum. And add to that the fact that I still see people posting repeatedly things that make it clear they still don't get it, even after they and others have been penalized by Google for their activities. Some days it's just all too stupid...
If the directory is maintained properly and submissions are properly reviewed the directories are a valuable resource. From my experience of running a directory for more than 2 years directory submissions do help sites get traffic. I see a lot of directories these days that clearly do not moderate their submissions and are a complete waste of time. Where is the value to the searcher.
Thats fine but for every question there are several possible views, these views may not at all times be the same. someone better tell yahoo and the likes to stop this practice then as that s exactly how thier feature ads are placed, highest bidder at the top. What i find and see more often that is directories that claim editor pick, random previews, etc etc and they are all affiliate links and nothing to do with random and or aditors review. Nothing wrong with affiliate but decieving people is another story ? would not visitors to a site confirm who uses them, i think that no body uses them is a little long from where its at, and to get people coming back you provide content as with any site.
But which sites? Other directory sites? Other webmaster sites? Webmaster forums? You're not the first one to make this claim but honestly I doubt that Joe Surfer has ever heard of your directories and even if he had he's going to use a search engine to find information and services, not your directory. And I don't see a non-webmaster, non-directory site getting any significant traffic from these directories. I have listings in Yahoo and DMOZ and I can tell you I doubt that I get even half a dozen hits from them in a year (unless I rattle a few DMOZ editors, and then I get a clump of DMOZ visits for a couple of days). Face it: If people were actually using directories, you know that Google wouldn't be hiding the Google Directory - they'd be promoting the hell out of it and selling advertising space. Absolutely. Honestly, do you read that stuff? If yes, would you be reading any of it if you weren't curious about the competition or looking for hints as to how to improve the revenue for your own directory? See above - when you talk about traffic, you also have to define what that traffic is, where it comes from, and where it's going, or it's just another meaningless statistic.
Fair enough, i clicked after i posted who you were from the past, all i can say is you have your views & i have mine. For my side of things i am building a directory for the people, and in that a service for those who wish to advertise in it , in ragards to the possibilities of people reading it, only time will tell. Cheers
GreenMonster... I started a test about 4 weeks before Google began penalizing directories. I submitted a relatively new, never promoted web site to 50 paid directories and around 20 bidding directories. The site had already been indexed by all three of the search engines and was within the top 100 for it's 3 primary keywords. After the search engines began picking up the links the SERP's steadily rose and the site got into the top 10 on all 3 of it's main keywords. It is still up there for these keywords even after all the changes and penalties by Google, but seems to jump around in the top 20. The target keywords were not highly competitive, but my conclusion was that the linkage helped the site.
