Then why are their too many people making them?

I am not saying your wrong, I just dont get how things have got so bad with diectorys 6 months ago when I was busy doing this type of work directorys used to be an important part of doing SEO work and there were so many great directorys at reasonable prices it really made it worth going though lists of 1000s, but ATM it is so bad I simpley dont want to waste my time even looking at directoys anymore as you only get a handful that are worth submitting to out of loads you look at.

The ones I dont get most though are the ones charging crazy money in exchange for you to be added to a page which is not even indexed or only indexed by Yahoo. I just dont get how they come up with their prices, why would i want to pay as high as $20-$150 (I have seen now) to be added to a page which has a value of nothing IMO, infact they should pay me for wasing my time looking at it.

Because it virtually costs zero to make a directory.

Hosting doesnt come free dude, and i am sure for any directory it definately needs hosting, unless u go swing by at some free webhosting, but that directory would not be worth eating by me would it be ?

Free directories get lots of traffic. Traffic = money, so big companies like iEntry buy the directories and make money from banner ads etc etc. So people can make a free directory very cheaply and sell it for money.

All I ask for from a directory for the pages to be indexed and not cost an arm and a leg to be able to submit to them as it aint like they hold much value as links anyways and dont normally sent any traffic. That is what makes a quality directory for me if the directory allows deep linking, has other content on it other than simpley a directory, has PR inner pages, has dedicated details pages for each website with large description then all the better and I dont mind paying for such extras.

Erm like 99% of them are not listed in Google now when you look at the inner pages the ones where your website will be listed, I aint gonna pay any real amount of money to be listed on a page that aint even listed in Google. I just feel people charge way to much just 6 months ago as I said $50 would get you on MSN small business directory now you can pay $50 to get on a directory that has only been running for 6 months and dont even have its inner pages indexed in google. As I say the amount of new directories I see charging and they are not even indexed at all just makes me laugh at first but then annoys me cos its wasting my time looking at them.

As I already said I maybe way off the mark and for all I know maybe it is worth spending crazy amounts of money to get listed on pages that only get indexed by Yahoo if your lucky but...

I mean just $10 per directory soon adds up to a lot of money when your talking about 100s of directoires $1000 just to be added to 100 pages that are only listed in Yahoo come on thats crazy. IU get a funny feeling its only going to get worse to if Google have decided to try and kill off all these directories then it wont be long before all the other search engines follow them. Just an opinion nad I maybe way of the mark.

I see your point johneva, but this all cuts it down to the age of a web site/domain, as there are relatively new web directories that have a huge amount of indexed pages, whilst some have less. If you're going to buy quality listings that will help you in SERP's, you may want to increase that 10$ budget.

Web directories that have been running for years tend to help you in SERPs better than new directories, but that's why you should buy reviews at web directories with reputeable directory owners, directory owners that know how to operate a web directory.
