I'm not sure I'd agree with that. There's plenty of instances where natural link growth would show many more peaks and seasonal variations.

ECommerce sites around Christmas time, or product launches, recruitment industries around graduation times, DVD sites when a summer blockbuster is released etc etc.

I think Google may to an extent (though it's probably a small factor) normalise link growth peaks, possibly to combat link bait, though again there's plenty of real world examples of this growth occuring naturally for it not to make sense for them to do this.

They are general trends. For example, if you had a website which has seasonal peaks Google would be looking for the natural link growth between years - each year should have higher link growth that the year before.

Good article. It's informative. To have better SERP result, we must consider both links and contents as what thunderbolt said.

This article is assuming you already have done on-page optimization. It is not explaining the full SEO process, just explaining how your backlinks should grow for maximum SERPs.

It seems like it would be very hard to achieve this type of model.

If your website is high quality, people will link to you organically. As more people link to you , you get more traffic, and in turn even more backlinks. Perfect backlink growth is unachievable by directory submissions etc, this is why high quality websites succeed (wikipedia) and websites with manual link growth do not.
