I want opinions. I have learned HTML and a bit of CSS and PHP but I want to know, in your own opinion, which is hardest.

PHP is the only programming language out of the 3 (scripting technically), so PHP.

I would also agree that php is the hardest. It's the only one that is server side and has the highest functionality.

    HTML

When you're responsible for it, you have to listen to EVERYONE else involved cry about stuff they absolutely need you to "fix".

Definately PHP. As soulscratch said, it's the only real programming language out there. HTML is a structural markup language, while CSS is a presentational styling language. The only real obstacle to writing REAL HTML will be learning semantics - which means that actually paying attention in English (or whatever your native language is) will actually pay off. The only real problem with learning CSS will be browser quirks - and as far as learning it, I place the blame for that squarely on the authors of the books and tutorials.

If I were to make a complete complex site then HTML would definitely be the hardest top code a full site. PHP code is just more secure and quicker to put a complete site together. CSS I agree with Dan is just styling. You can't load a site with only CSS code.

I've seen some pretty clever full HTML coding in my time. The kind of stuff I learned a lot from. However, the only real way to learn how to code is by doing it raw and from the beginning. There are a zillion templates out there that one can modify to their hearts content. When you build a site from scratch just using notepad or Edit Pad Pro, that's when you know you are really coding.

PHP of course... because it is a programming language. Knowledge and logic is really needed to get better on that.

Hmmm. HTML is a cinch, no dobt in my mind that thats the easiest. The basics of both CSS and PHP are very easy to learn, and I like to think of myself as very good at CSS, but when I compare myself to Deathshadow, I know absolutely nothing, so it proves that CSS is also complex if you delve far enough into it, and as you have to design for several browsers and screen resolutions, making the perfect layout could be a lot harder than making a PHP script.

So in this case, I'm gonna say it depends on the circumstances,

I agree that Php is hardest to learn among those three. You can learn beginner lessons online, but to really implement php sites like cms and all, damn hard :D

    PHP, of course.

You can learn (X)HTML and CSS in a short amount of time.
Whereas this is not the case when it comes to learning PHP.

PHP coupled with MySQL, is hard.
As there are way too many functions to study and learn.

    Thanx,
    Shadab.

when was the last time you wrote a complex site using html only? How many databases did it interact with, exactly?

PHP is nothing to do with security or speed, its to do with functionality.

Its like comparing apples to bricks.

If you want to learn PHP, you need to have a good understanding of (x)html and CSS anyway. Without understanding the concepts of how html works, your PHP code will be gi-go.

If you want to ride a bike, you've got to know how to walk first.

I think you got your answer. If you compare apple to apple and orange to orange, you might have a different result. For example, JSP vs. PHP vs. ASP. Anyhow, PHP isn't hard to learn, but indeed you need to know HTML and CSS as well to build a good website.
