There has been no concrete proof on that. The jury is still out. Try out everything that you should and see what works for you.
Meta tags help describing the result better in some search engines, but I don't think it is so important in SEO anymore, but it's worth including it anyway.

A good meta description just provokes the google users to choose your site .It doesnt affect serp or pr etc.Google officers say meta des. should be descriptive to attact people.
I believe that META tags are still important. They are not AS important as they used to be, but I always include them just in case. Many times, I have seen my website on the SERPS of google and the meta description is displayed.. so I think that they aren't completely gone away with just yet
Absolutely right. Even meta tags is not useful in improving SERP in google it still affect the clicks of the user. If you have good description on your meta tags your site could get the click from the user during their query on SE. And also meta tags are still useful on some SE. So, why not use it since it doesn't harm your site.

Absolutely right, but being a good description for your qualitative content, this description becomes a some kind of attraction. For example, description meta tags and their uniqueness and relevance are as important for search engines as unique content and well performed design, usability and friendly navigation are important for visitors.
Meta tags are used and are important. It is one of the SEO components. I would definitely recommend using it as it acts like a marketing line to provoke user to click on your link in the SERPs
Your meta tags CAN hurt your site. But only if you do something stupid like stuff the description with 1000 words or put like 500 keywords in there that don't even show up in the text. Otherwise you should have them in there.
I've read that meta tags are severely depreciated now in terms of worth yet checking the top sites in several categories this evening I found those with the highest rankings - among other things, had extensive but clear use of meta tags (including a few I'd never seen before).
So most of ppl thinks that meta tags are no more important in Google but we should keep them in every page etc etc. now there is some Controversy in keeping them. if we insert meta keywords. what is safe amount (i normally use 30 unique)? r metas should different in every page ? or same for all website... (think for example u have million of pages on net )
No mate this is not 100% true. Yes now days the value of some meta tags goes down but meta title tag still on boom
Smaller search engines still give some weightage to meta tags. But, Google, Yahoo and MSN(Live) have far more advanced algorithms. Still, you should not stuff way too many keywords in the meta tags. That will give a bad impression and your site might look a bit spammy to big search engines.
Why your confused? all their are trying to say is that its better to still put meta keyword since it won't hurt your site. Besides their still some SE like yahoo that still added weight on it. But for your info, google no longer use this one
