Well there's a few different techniques you can use there. Each one isn't neccesarily easy and will take a bit of mastering.
I've not used all of them - some of them (such as selling public domain videos) is something I'm planning to do.

So...how much of the software is free? I use Camtasia at work. Sure, you can get a 30-day free trial, but it's $299 to buy. That's a little...no a lot out of my price range. Free alternatives?
A lot of it is free to use - and there are free alternatives. I think you can get a previous version of Camstasia (Camstasia 3) for free. Do a search in Google. However, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay for software/tools if they are useful for your business. I have Camtasia paid version and think it is great.
