I just bought a brand new LG laptop which came with VISTA... The thing is slow as can be... And every couple of actions I do it brings up this dialog asking me "Are you sure you want to do this?!" At first I was like ok this is good, security is important... Now after a week of having this laptop I must have had that message nearly 100 times Can anyone recommend how I can finetune VISTA to work faster?
How much RAM does it have? I have noticed anything below 2 GB makes any system crawl to a stand still when using Vista. The confirmation box's you can turn off, but you have to ask tech support how to do it (i forget how right now). With more RAM you will also notice more graphical things will happen.
Ok I have 1GB of RAM... Cant solve that right now... How about the confirmation box... Any way to turn that off?
Do I feel your pain, my father went to get a laptop by himself, which I told him not to, and got suckered into vista on a laptop that totalllly can't handle it. He hates that "Are you sure you want to do this?!" message. If the screen saver comes on, forget about it, it takes like seriously 5 minutes to bring it back.
Haha, exactly my thoughts after I first tried the OS on my dad's new laptop: http://theworldthroughmyeyes.com/2007/05/windows-vista-just-to-pass-the-time/ It's just not cut out to be XP's successor, is it?
Most DP posters know me as a very quiet, semi-helpful person...that said, roll back or get xp. I am a tech-boy and nothing has annoyed me more than this operating system. XP asked for more memory originally, and now...so has Vista. I respect Microsoft a lot (many people don't know that they donate huge amounts of money to battle cybercrimes and stopping child-porn - I'm in Toronto, and that division is funded partially by them) but this operating system is the bane of existence. XP although a hog, hasn't really ever let me down. <-- Uh-oh, I'm gonna get flamed...I just know it...
I found my turning off the indexing (right click your hard disk > propeties) that Vista ran alot better, also adjusting the security on c:\ and any other drives I had to full or read/write removed alot of the nagging messages. Also stopping the index service as you will see Vista has alot of processes. If you dont like or get bored of Aero if you have it then this will also speed things up. You could disable user account control but it is kinda useful especially if you increased your security and permissions... also an extra GB of RAM did make things nip along better when running a few apps at a time.
Turn off Indexing and system restore. Also onboard GPU maybe slowing things down so disabling aero or adjusting display settings will help.
Thanks guys for all your suggestions, especially Exodus... I will see how this goes and if Im not happy after a week or two I will probably go back to XP.....
I have Vista with 2 and 4GB ram, it's never been a problem for me. OP it is UAC control causing you problem ATM, just turn it off. I remember seeing all this BS negativity when XP came out and 2 years down the line everyone used it. It always happens and it is even happening with Apples new OS. Here's my solution for people who don't like Vista even thought they have not tried it. Form an opinion for yourself for once or don't buy a new PC.
yeh that annoyed the hell out of me too! You need to disable user account control and that stops the constant security pop-ups. However, every time you boot your computer you get a security warning saying you've got user account control disabled - i've not found out how to disable that. But 1 warning is better than lots!
You click on the red X and say "Don't remind me of this (In the options) and it goes away.... I don't understand why people bash on Vista, RUN THE UPGRADE TOOL before you go out and buy it. I am running Vista Ultimate on my computer (2gigs RAM dualcore ,ect) and it runs fine - LAG FREE believe it or NOT. I had no problems upgrading XP to Vista, everything transfered over perfectly. Vista has ALOT of improvements over XP that I have noticed, Google Vistas Features..(I don't feel like typing them all out) Security is improved....by alot - Just yesterday It caught a virus in a file I was going to download that AVG/Norton did not catch... So in conclusion... Stop bashing on Vista Upgrade Grandmas Emachine (lol) Enjoy the next gen OS. -Bigvick I could not agree with you more, I remember all the XP bashing....and now LOOK at XP. Vista will become the main OS in the future....
