Never happy with design

I just do not know what to do. I want to give my site a makeover and change a lot of stuff. I have a lot of notes written up and ready to go. But I can not use any of them until I have a basic design. The problem is I am never happy with anything I come up with. I know the design right now sucks and I can do better then that. But no matter what I am never happy with anything. Someone has offered me one free template from their site that I can use. I get the choice of any template that they have but templates do not even make me happy.

Anyone have any advice? I know my site can be great....if I ever decide on a basic design.

At our web development company we dread clients who are "never happy with the design". I guess, when we started off, we had the same feeling about *our* web site, however, gradually, its dawned on us that its not the design that matters... its always the content (text). Make sure you have content that is meaningful and useful to the visitor. As I say, your web site has two kinds of visitors and both of them are important - humans and search engine bots. You cannot have a filthy design because that would be a tunr off for humans and you simply cannoy put those great flash animations because they wouldn't be read by SE bots. So what can you do? Arrive at a compromise.
Remember, you can have the most beautiful looking web site in the world but if only 10-20 people see it each day it will fade into oblivion.

Forget animated gifs, flash, frames, iframes. Keep the design simple with a nice color combination. You can get the much needed inspiration from web sites that offer those color combinations (search for it on Google). And make sure you follow basic SEO for all your web pages.

I guess it might take time for you to get out of the trap (it took us a few months) and I hope this post will provide the needed impetus.

Yeah I have come to the conclusion that I will not be completely happy with any design I come up with. I am not going with a template except the one I make with my site. If I go with a template from the internet I will feel like I have not put enough work into it.

How bad are iframes? I ask this because I want to integrate my forums into my site. The only way I know that I can integrate it into my site is inside a frame or iframe. Would it be OK to do 1 iframe on my site for this? I use mybb for my forums. I want to upgrade to vbulletin but that will have to wait until I earn enough money online because I do not have any money that I can invest into this site. So like I said the only way I know how to have my forum is either by itself or in an iframe.

Thank you in advance for your replies.

I consistently have the same problem. When I started to redesign my site (about 3 months ago) I came up with a design I thought was great. By the time I tweaked it and coded it, I was really sick of it. I repeated this process probably 5 or 6 times. Idk, I have a pretty good idea now of what I am going to do, but chances are I'll get sick of this one too =/.

And to answer your question about iframes, you could possibly use http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/ if you have php and mysql on your server. They offer somthing like vbulletin where you can download it and install it yourself.

    I hope this helps,
    Greg

Hehe. I would like to think so sometimes.

veckd- I may go with phpbb. I think I had that at one point but can not remember what my problem was. I think I just messed up something and changed to another program. But now I am a bit smarter and do backups often. Will check out the phpbb forums to see if they have what I need.
