Penalties for duplicate content?

I've heard Google penalizes pages with duplicate content.

In an attempt to avoid confusion, I've opted to register the .net, .com, and .org suffixes of a specific domain. The same content will be posted on all three suffixes of this domain.

    1. Will the search engines penalize me for duplicate content?
    2. If yes, what are ways to avoid this?

    Thanks,

    Alex.

Yes. Although it's really a filter rather than a penalty. But either way that's something you want to avoid.

You will want to pick one to be your main domain and then 301 redirect the others to it.

For instance you could pick the .com as the main one then redirect the .org and .net to it.

    Stealth-forwarding will work.

YoungMaster's method is the best way to go.
Your domain registrar should have an option to forward.

if you use the same content on all the domains that you mention, it will be duplicate content. you use use 301 redirect from .net, .org to .com option

I also have a question, since we are on this subject...

If someone duplicates my content, is there a way for google to know that i had posted my content first??

Why bother? Just send the hosting providers (if in the US) of the offending sites as well as the search engines a DMCA takedown/complaint notice.

    Which can be lost.

Some people host their own sites. For those who do not, it would be easy enough to switch providers. ;)

Unless they have an actual physical server hosting the infringing site on their private property, they've got the site hosted somewhere else. ;)

    Thanks for the assistance.

How do redirected domains hold up in the SERPs?

    Alex.

It allows the search engines to follow the links normally. (That's the short version.)
