Correct. I originally thought I'd have to find someone in Asia to be my contact. I found a domain proxy though and they can be that contact. I ordered 2 .asia domains that way. I will know in February.

Hi David, excellent news, would you mind providing a link to the domain proxy, im not fully sure what one is so if you can advise further on that it would be great, thanks.

Edit: I noticed your reply on another thread mentioning hostway, thats cool, i will use them although il probably wait till Feb 08, but its pleasing to find out i will be able to purchase a .asia

I just registered 2 more .asia's last night (and two .us's). The problem with waiting until Feb is that you'll miss the chance at auction for domains you really want.

Your right, i think i will be better off doing it sooner, than waiting till Feb.

Congrats on the extra ones just ordered, am i correct in believing that their officially not owned yet but at least your in with regards to securing them as long as not too many others are after the same domains?

Right. People with TM's and company identities tied to the domains get first crack. All of mine are still available and aren't tm'able. I just have a pre-order that puts me in the running at auction OR gives it to me if not registered before Feb and no backorders exist.

My understanding is that if you don't pre-register, you can't get in on the auction for the .asia domains when there is more than one person with an order. It would be a private auction. It seems like the advantage is that you get first-crack at popular domains before they hit the public sector. If it's a popular domain, it's never going to make it past auction it would seem. I guess I'm also gambling that people in my market will miss the .asia launch and not get pre-orders in.

I am getting more proactive on registering domains with anything to do with my market. Seems to be working. Traffic is increasing on my site.

I see why your taking this approach, while costing a little more and there not being a guarantee, i can see your long term thoughts and doing what you can to get in there ahead of your competitors.

So for example, with a .asia domain that you have pre-ordered, if no one else is trying to pre-order that, does it go straight to you when the time comes?

And is it the case that if more than yourself is showing interest in a domain that it then automatically goes to auction?

Or is the auction just a part of the whole pre-order process anyway? but further down the line.

Only goes to auction with .asia if there is more than one pre-order AND if no company had first crack at it because of a TM (or corporate identity). Otherwise, you get it if you are the only pre-order. Technically, if the company that takes the pre-order drops the ball and doesn't register it immediately after the pre-reg is over, I guess you could still lose it to someone that swoops in quick. The idea of pre-order I believe is that you have someone working on your behalf.

Right, im getting a better understanding of this process now, apologies for all the questions regarding this :) its making much more sense to me from your explanations.

So theres quite a bit of responsibility for the company that takes the pre-orders, they need to be on top of things to try and secure the domains.

Its also a trust thing too i guess, that the company will take care of what the pre-order customers are paying for.

But you have to pay around $100 per domains as non-refund fees. If you could not get the domain name, you will lose out the money.

Only Godaddy is charging them as far as I've seen. The UK company (www.hostway.co.uk) didn't charge one. They don't charge until they get you the domain...and then it's just the regular fee. My CC has never been touched. They say they "reserve the right" to get their deferred fees upfront but they haven't yet.

I have checked it. It says they will not charge registeration fees which is £24 for 2 years. But they will still charge the sunrise application fees when the order is received.

Did you choose the "pre-registration" box? They have 4 columns. I picked the sunrise column (column 2) the 2nd time by mistake until I caught myself. Column #3 charges nothing at order time. It's the pre-reg box. They deferred the registration fees and didn't charge me anything to my cc. I have completed 4 orders already with $0 upfront. They do charge a little extra for being your Asian contact.

Here is the exact transaction with "test.asia":

    Current Charges Total: £ 0.00
    Deferred Charges Total: £ 24.85 ($51)

    Order Total: £ 24.85

    Please Note:

The Current Charges Total is the amount that will be charged to your credit card immediately upon completing this order.

The Deferred Charges Total is the amount that will be charged to your credit card ONLY for pre-registered domains that are successfully registered. You will NOT be charged for unsuccessful pre-registrations.

We reserve the right to pre-authorize your credit card (if applicable) for the Deferred Charges Total amount prior to submitting your pre-registrations to the registry. If the pre-authorization fails then your pre-registrations will NOT be submitted.
